1. Progresses Made
1.1. Design specification and requirements
The machine is a medium scale machine which can be manufactured easily. It can be given for
small and medium enterprises which can add a value on the use of natural fiber especially the sisal
plant.

The designed machine is specifically and mainly designed for farmers and also with affordable
price.

1.2. Collecting relevant design information

Before undergoing any design processes, we have referred literatures in order to design a machine
for sisal leaf fiber extraction and we have gained a necessary understanding and clear view of how
extraction methods happen in general for variety of natural fibers.
1.3. Design conceptualization
A product concept is a general description of the technology and form of the product.it is concise
description of how the product will satisfy the customer needs. A concept is usually expressed as a sketch
or as a rough three-dimensional model and is often accompanied by a brief textual description. The
concept generation process begins with a set of customer needs and target specifications and results in a
set of product concepts from which the team will make a final selection.
The generated concepts are included in the appendix section of this report.

1.4. Design modeling and simulation

A final design is chosen from all the concepts generated by using concept screening and concept scoring
matrix.
The selection criteria for the Screening and Scoring Matrices were chosen with respect to the objectives
for the final prototype design. The criteria used were: cost, performance, portability, weight,
manufacturability, durability, safety, and ease of use. In the Screening Matrix, each alternative was
assigned a ‘+’ if the alternative was an improvement over the reference, a “-“ if the alternative was not an
improvement, and a ‘0’ if the alternative provided no change from the reference. After repeating this for
each of the eight selection criteria, the +’s, -‘s, and 0’s were summed to provide a net total for each of the
components. The alternatives with the highest net score were chosen to be evaluated in an accompanying
scoring matrix.
The completed 3D model made with Catia software is shown here under in figure 1 and 2.

8 Design for assembly and manufacturing 0%

3. Results
we are able to obtain a clear view of how the components should be arranged, what process should pass
the sisal leaf. Generally, we can put our findings as follows:

 Main components of the machine

 Processes that the sisal leaf should pass in the machine
 Complete 3D Model of the machine
 Foundation for design analysis optimization assessment

4. Remaining work
Since, we have left only a few modeling in the CAD process, we can jump right to the Analysis part. In
the analysis part there are four major steps to be taken. This are:

 Design analysis
 Design optimization
 Design evaluation
 Design for manufacturing and assembly
Afterwards we can manufacture the components easily according to the design analysis.

5. Challenges or problems faced

We are a little behind the scheduled plan. We haven’t seen the project to be this vast that we didn’t
consider some tasks to be finished within the allocated time interval. So, we will remake the schedule so
as to cop up to the final date (deadline) of the project.
