HQGOSF NEWSLETTER

MARCH 2018
Publisher: Y Vazquez
Editor: Debbie Sprague VOL:103
HQGOSF2010@gmail.com

Meeting will be followed by an open sewing program. An open sewing

program means you get to work on your own projects. What a way to
finish your Round Robins, Mug Rugs, Challenge Quilts, your block for the
Guild’s quilt (Onward & Upward). Remember to bring all your sewing
supplies that you will need, extension cords, lunch & drinks. Spend the
afternoon sewing with your friends.

Message from our President

Unfortunately, I will not be able to be at our March meeting. Cathy Hampshire will be
running the meeting. With no one asking to speak at our March’s meeting, it will be
short and sweet followed by a day of sewing/quilting on your own items.
Meantime, here is some information you will need to know:
Cindy Hislop, has advised me that we can have a table at their craft show in October.
We need to get busy making things to sell. Mugs Rugs, quilts, and wall hangings, just
use your imagination. I hope we can make a good showing.
Fund raising dates to remember:
June 30 Applebee’s Flapjack Breakfast..headed by Debbie Sprague
September 28 (for 12 weeks) Island Jack’s Bingo..headed by Jeannette Smith

Hello Ladies,
Happy Saint Patty’s Day!
Piecemaker’s have been busy, busy, busy! Tina and I delivered 30 quilts, 30 baby blankets, 30
burpees, 30 totes and crocheted baby hats, so cute! We have just had a demo on sewing on binding,
so that we are on all on the same page and consistent. The Thursday ladies whipped out about 20
quilts. GOOD JOB! We now have plenty of quilts to sandwich and quilt. Onward and upward! So
proud of our worker Bees.
Piecemaker’s is in need of a co-chair. Please talk to us if you are interested.
Remember to volunteer to help with the rummage sale; this is our rent to St. Luke’s. Check with
Jeanette or Cindy for sign-up times and tasks.
We also need black fabric. Thank you.
Wear green or get pinched.
2nd VP Cathy Hampshire
Hibiscus Quilt Guild of South Florida
Minutes for Saturday, February 17th, 2018
Meeting opened at 9:40 by Jeanette Smith
Board members present: Jeannette Smith, Debbie Sprague, Pam Montezuma, Linda Butler,
Cathy Hampshire and Christine Burtch
Total number of members present: 17

Proposed budget discussed. Jackie Blazok moved and Michelle Kay 2nd that the budget be
accepted as proposed. Motion passed.

Debbie Sprague will be the interim 1st VP until Kathy Battaglia returns from rehab.

Quarter Auction: Michelle Kay announced the Quarter Auction will be postponed until Thursday,
October 4th. There will be a table to hold a Chinese Auction of mini quilts on an assortment of
stands 12 inches wide and smaller. If willing to make a mini quilt to donate for this auction,
please inform Michelle the size of your quilt so a suitable stand will be provided. There is no
theme so all quilts are welcomed. Stands may come from Brewers depending upon the cost as
well as a possibility of wood stands made by Melissa Henize’s husband. We will also be
auctioning off 2 items for quarters.

Treasurer’s report: Beginning balance: $6,384.22. Ending balance: $7,733.59. Jackie Blazok
questioned some details on reports published in the newsletter which were clarified by Debbie
Sprague. Jackie moved and Pam Montezuma 2nd the report be accepted as given. Motion
passed.

Minutes: Jeannette’s name is spelled with a double n. Cindy last name is not Hargrove but is
Hislop. Mercedine moved and Yolanda Vasquez 2nd the minutes be approved as
amended. Motion passed.

Piecemakers: Linda Butler announced there will be a chicken barbeque on Saturday, March 10th
from 11 to 6 at the church. $8 will buy a ½ chicken and sides.

Rummage Sale: we will be collecting items to sell. Bring them to the church on Sunday, March
11 for a set-up on March 19th. Volunteers are needed.

Bears for charity were shown and fleece was requested.

Quilt sizes: for consistency the best sizes are approximately 48 x 56 for youth and 40 x 44 for
baby quilts.

Volunteers are also needed for quilting.

Membership: Anna May was introduced as our newest member. Two members did not receive
the newsletter.

Fundraisers: Debbie Sprague. Pam Montezuma re-suggested there be 4 members in a

committee instead of 2 co-chairs with no head of the committee but having the 1st VP in charge.

Members were reminded that when purchasing from amazon.com, if they sign in
at smile.amazon.com instead, a portion of their purchases can be directed to Hibiscus Quilt
Guild.

Applebee’s offers two fundraising opportunities. The first is a Flapjack Breakfast with pancakes,
sausage, scrambled eggs and a beverage. The suggested cost is $11 for children and $13 for
adults and would be served from 8 to 10 AM only. Of the price charged, $4 would go to
Applebee’s and the rest would go to our guild. A maximum of 300 tickets would be sold in
advance by the members and we would have to give a $100 deposit. 1 location, 1 breakfast day
and time. The second opportunity is Dining to Donate where we again have a specific location
and day. Any guest handing our flyer in when paying would have 10% of their bill donated to
Hibiscus, but if they don’t have/remember the flyer, there is no donation. We would be limited
to one fundraiser once per year. The general consensus was the breakfast would be a better
opportunity of the two for more donations. Debbie Sprague will check for available dates with
May or June offering the first available possibilities. There may be a possibility of raffles, and
mini quilts placed on tables then raffled off at 10 was suggested. Debbie will give an update at
the March meeting.

Yolanda Vazquez: the Art Community Redevelopment Agency of Lake Worth (LWCRA) would
allow us to sell one or more quilts at their location. Michelle Kay will head the exhibit. We may
sell one piece at a time. There is a $25 application fee per “section” to be clarified. The location
is officially called Hatch 11-21. Jackie Blazok moved and Pam Montezuma 2nd we should further
investigate the opportunity. Motion passed. Yolanda will get more details.

Debbie Sprague announced all workshops are listed in the newsletter. If you have any questions
about changes in classes, please contact Debbie. Classes are scheduled through 2019. Celeste
will be teaching mitered corners in May, Michelle will teach shaving cream fabric dying in August.

Jeanette Smith: restricted funds committees must turn in detailed reports quarterly. Debbie
Sprague will create a form for consistency.

Michelle Kay showed Onward & Upward themed quilt contributions so far. There is no standard
background fabric but blocks must be 12 ½ inches square and are due by June 15th. Any
technique is acceptable.

Kathy Ward will be choosing the theme for the 2019 guild quilt.

Meeting closed at 11:05

Show and tell, round robin presentations and secret pal swaps followed but no birthday basket
was presented this month.

Respectfully submitted, Christine Burtch, Historian & Interim Secretary
