FEA LAB Exercise 2

- Solutions
Analysis shown here is based on FE analysis of a floor slab with the dimension of 9 x 18 m2

Because the floor slab and the applied loads are symmetrical about the x and y axes. We
can do perform our analysis based on ¼ of the slab model shown below
1. Define unit
2. Define grids
For this exercise, we chose to have 0.1x0.1 m2 grid size
3. Create elements
Column at the bottom left corner
3. Create elements
½ of Column at the top left corner
3. Create elements
the slab in between the two columns
3. Create elements
copying the three elements to 5.7m to the right
3. Create elements
copying the three elements to 5.7m to the right
3. Create elements
copying the three elements to 5.7m to the right
3. Create the rest of the elements
3. Create the rest of the elements
3. Create the rest of the elements
3. Create the rest of the elements
3. Create the rest of the elements
3. Create the rest of the elements
4. Define properties of the elements
Assign property type 2 to the columns
4. Define properties of the elements
Assign property type 2 to the columns
4. Define properties of the elements
Material property for Plate property 1 – Materials AS3600
concrete f’c = 32 Mpa
Type : plate/shell
4. Define properties of the elements
Geometry for Plate property 1 – thickness = 0.15m
4. Define properties of the elements
Material property for Plate property 2 – Materials AS3600
concrete f’c = 32 Mpa
Type : plate/shell
4. Define properties of the elements
Geometry for Plate property 2 – thickness = 0.15m
4. Define properties of the elements
Geometry for Plate property 2 – thickness = 0.15m
5. Mesh the elements
size of mesh 0.3 x 0.3 m2
5. Mesh the elements
size of mesh 0.3 x 0.3 m2
5. Mesh the elements
mesh size = 0.3 x 0.31 m2
5. Mesh the elements
mesh size = 0.31 x 0.3 m2
5. Mesh the elements
5. Mesh the elements

Etc. until all the elements are meshed

5. Mesh the elements

All of the elements are meshed

6. Apply restraints
6. Apply restraints
Along the top edge – symmetry about y axis
6. Apply restraints
Along the top edge – symmetry about y axis
6. Apply restraints
Along the right edge – symmetry about x axis
6. Apply restraints
top right hand corner – symmetry about x and y axes
6. Apply restraints
All columns
7. Define fixed degrees of freedom
8. Define fixed degrees of freedom
Only the rotation about z axis is fixed
9. Apply load
Apply self weight.
Here, the self weight is assigned to Load Case 1
9. Apply load
We are going to assume that the point load of 10 kN is a live load.
So, a new load case needs to be created
9. Apply load
Apply the point load.
The point load is assigned to load case 2.
10. Apply load case combination
We will apply the load case combination 1.2G + 1.5Q to demonstrate how this is
done, please try other load case combinations
10. Apply load case combination
Click Add and type 1.2 and 1.5 besides Load Case 1 and Load Case 2, respectively
10. Run analysis
10. Run analysis
10. Run analysis
Analysis has been completed
