Production of Lactic Acid from Indian Almond Mesocarp

The plant design is about the production of lactic acid. The processes in the
production compared to other studies is somewhat the same but this time the raw
material to be used is the Indian Almond mesocarp. This is an ongoing study of Aycardo,
Celis and Montoya. The processes involved are the acid extraction of carbohydrates from
the fruit’s mesocarp, fermentation of the carbohydrates to produce lactic acid and lastly,
the purification of the produced lactic acid.

The design is significant because the increasing demand of environmental-friendly

products leads also to the rising demand on the production of lactic acid. Lactic acid is
used in the production of PLA plastics, which are mainly used in packaging products that
comply with the environmental norms.

The plant will be a pioneer in producing lactic acid in the Philippines and the major
raw material, which is the Indian Almond mesocarp is already a waste. The plant’s
location will be Batangas wherein the plantation of the Indian Almond tree will also be
prioritized therefore it will also give a good impact to the environment.

As one of the major concern of the company, it will surely bring an economic help to
the Philippine trade and economy besides of an additional source of income for most of
the residents of the plant’s location.
