EPA chief spent millions

By Michael Biesecker

WASHINGTON — Environmental Protection Agency

chief Scott Pruitt’s concern with his safety came at a steep
cost to taxpayers as his swollen security
detail blew through overtime budgets and
at times diverted officers away from
investigating environmental crimes.
Altogether, the agency spent millions
of dollars for a 20-member full-time
detail that is more than three times the
size of his predecessor’s part-time securi-
ty contingent.
Scott Pruitt New details in Pruitt’s expansive
spending for security and travel emerged
from agency sources and documents reviewed by the

fends off allegations of profligate spending and ethical
missteps that have imperiled his job.
Shortly after arriving in Washington, Pruitt demoted the

Bernie Sanders struggles
with new path to black voters
JACKSON, Mississippi — As Bernie Sanders contemplates
making another president bid in 2020, the Vermont senator
still is searching for the right way to
attract more black voters who backed
Hillary Clinton and effectively denied him
the Democratic nomination in 2016.
His challenge was on display in
Mississippi this week, where he traveled
to mark the 50th anniversary of Martin
Luther King’s assassination but along the
way managed a clumsy critique of the
Democratic Party under the nation’s first
Bernie Sanders black president
Former President Barack Obama,
Sanders said, was a “charismatic individual ... an extraordi-
nary candidate, a brilliant man.” But “behind that reality,”
Sanders said, Obama led a party whose “business model” has
been a “failure” for more than a decade.
It served as the latest confirmation that Sanders, even as he
tries for new footholds in the black community, hasn’t mas-
tered his precarious relationship with a key Democratic Party
constituency that he will need if he hopes to reshape the party
going forward, much less make another presidential run in

primaries.

Stanford’s Reid Travis to
test his NBA draft prospects
STANFORD — Stanford forward Reid Travis will declare
for the NBA draft without signing with an agent.
Travis announced his decision Friday to test his
prospects. He will be allowed to work out for NBA teams and
is eligible for the draft combine before he must make a deci-
sion by May 30 to either remain in the draft or return to
school.
Travis has been selected to the All-Pac-12 team twice. He
ranks seventh in Stanford history with 1,427 points and
10th with 758 rebounds. He ranked third last season in the
Pac-12 in both scoring (19.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.7 rpg).
Travis missed the final 22 games in 2015-16 with a leg
injury and had his medical hardship petition granted by the
NCAA last May.

Raiders sign two — a CB and DE

ALAMEDA — The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent
cornerback Senquez Golson and defensive end Armonty
Bryant.
The team announced the moves Friday to add defensive
depth.
Golson was originally a second-round pick out of
Mississippi by Pittsburgh in 2015. He spent his first two
seasons on injured reserve with shoulder and foot injuries.
Golson spent time last year on Tampa Bay’s practice squad.
Bryant was originally a seventh-round pick by Cleveland
in 2013. He has played 36 games with the Browns and
Detroit, totaling 44 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks, three forced fum-
bles and one fumble recovery. Bryant didn’t play last sea-
son, getting released by the Lions after a four-game suspen-
sion for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.
