Book sale bonanza for charity

The Book Club have raised over £200 in support the School’s charities for 2013-14, Launchpad Reading and
Touraid.

Launchpad Reading is the chosen charity of this year’s School Captain's Domenico Cullura and Vice-Captain
Christopher Mountain. Touraid is championed by Mr Beckey, Mr Bywater and Mr Teixeira. All funds raised
will be split equally between the two charities

Book Club members asked students and staff to donate a good quality second hand book that they would
recommend to someone of their age. They then ran the sale over three days at their pop-up Book Trade
Centre (the old tuck shop cart) in the Cloisters, asking for a minimum donation of £1 per book.

Mrs Jackson, who co-ordinated the sale, says: “We suggested that this could be a chance to buy an early
Christmas gift or start a Secret Santa for classmates. We would like to thank Mr Sobieniak and 11E for
taking up our suggestion and running a Secret Santa for the whole class.”

Book Club members really enjoyed being part of the event team and were selling books, promoting the
book sale, asking boys and staff views on the sale and generally entering into the spirit of the event.

Hugo from 7C said: “I think it is a great way to get people to read and also raise money for charity”.

Domenico Cullura, School Captain, said: “Fantastic, really good raising money for such a great charity”.

Mr Beckey said: “I love reading and it’s for a great cause. A perfect combo!”

There are still some books left, and boys are selling these at break and lunchtimes. So there is still time to
get down to the LRC to grab a book bargain, while supporting two great charities at the same time.

Thanks to everyone who supported the event.

KUCHING: Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Kuching chapter aims to raise between
RM50,000 and RM60,000 from a charity jogathon here on Nov 29.
Vice-chairman and fundraising chief Titus Chuo said the event was one of the organisation’s
major activities to collect money to finance the chapter’s blood donation exercise, training for
youth as well as affiliate members in secondary and primary schools, and various
humanitarian and community projects.

“We need between RM130,000 and RM155,000 a year to finance these activities and office
administrative expenses,” he told reporters when receiving a RM20,000 sponsorship for the
jogathon from conglomerate Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS) at Wisma Mahmud here.

MRCS Kuching chapter chairman Datuk Abang Abdul Rauf Abang Zain received the mock
cheque from CMS group managing director Datuk Richard Curtis.

Chuo said the chapter, which did not get any annual grant from the Government, had
recently raised about RM40,000 from its annual paper flag sales.

He said some 200 participants were at last year’s event and the organiser was working hard
to get more joggers this year.

“To take part in the 4km event, a participant has to raise at least RM30 via an official
sponsorship card to be eligible for the run,” he added.

The jogathon has into six categories -- men and women open, boys and girls groups for
secondary school students, and boys and girls in primary schools.

Curtis said CMS, which successfully organised its own tribal run last month that attracted
some 2,200 runners, would encourage its employees to support the MRCS jogathon as it
was for a good cause. The tribal run raised more than RM103,000 which was equally
distributed to several charity homes, including orphanages.

Curtis lauded the chapter for doing a commendable job to help society, especially the blood
donation drive. The blood collected at Sarawak General Hospital and Normah Medical
Specialist Centre are for use by all hospitals in Kuching division.
