I really wanted to say something profound, but you would have forgotten it in 15
minutes – which is the afterlife of a graduation speech. I'll try not to talk too long.
They say it’s best to leave your audience before your audience leaves you.
One good thing about graduation is that we get to wear hats that make our brain
look larger than it actually is.
Newton D. Baker said the man who graduates today and stops learning tomorrow
is uneducated the day after. Mao nang uban dinhi banat gyug eskwela, taas nag
initials human sa ngalan. AB, BS, MA, MBA, MD, MSCrim, PhD, Ll.B., RGC,
MPS, Ed.D., RIP. Bitaw, to be educated is not just to collect academic initials,
but to live the things initially learned from Misamis University and apply them
in that reality we called life. That is why, unya, when the president and the dean
hand you your diploma, keep moving. Just in case they try to take it back.
The most beautiful thing in this world is to see your parents smiling, and
knowing that you are the reason behind that smile.
Mga ginikanan, mas dako pa inyong magasto nga kwarta pagframe anang ilang
diploma ug picture kaysa sa kwarta nga iremit nila sa unang trabaho nila, but
be patient.
After graduating, you will become alumni and you will be attending reunion soon.
But I advise never go to your reunion pregnant or they will think that is all you
have done since you graduated.
The history we learn at school doesn’t help us define our future, does it? Most of
us know how to add and subtract and not to multiply our investments. We know
how to do multiple choice but we struggle to make decisions. We know how to
analyse a poet’s voice, but we can’t express ourselves with precision. We learned
about the human body, but not how to find ourselves. We learned about the
brain, but not about mental health. We learned about modes of transport, but
not why travel makes us grow. We learned about new languages, but not old
cultures. We learn about only one perspective and not opposing versions. We
learn how to draw but not appreciate art. We are always pushed to get to the
end, but never know how to start. We were always told to get over stuff and not
how to walk through. We learn how to measure distance, but not the journey
within. What have we really learned?
Non schola discimus, sed vita...We study not for school but for life. In this time,
where we found out a lot of educational institutions have canonized OBE in the
academic altars as mandated by CHEd, let us not forget the pedagogical ways
and approaches to learning. Only intellectual pretenders who happened to
invade higher academic positions would say that the latter is already useless.
And as an Autonomous institution, in the spirit of that solemn Constitutional
doctrine of Academic Freedom, let us embrace multiple, pluralistic and diverse
approaches to education and beyond. By that we can continue to distinguish a
classroom from a factory.
The real test in life we will face are rejection, dealing with failure, having to start
from scratch and things not going our way. But tell me, when were you taught
perseverance, determination or persistence even for one day? The real challenges
we will face are being empathetic, understanding people’s challenges and the
ability to press pause. Would that be more beneficial than comparing your test
scores? Because at school you get the lesson first and the test after. But in life,
you get the test first and the lesson after. We need character, and not only focus
on calibre. We need values, not just the value of x and y. What if we learn about
empathy and not just economics? What if we learn about emotional intelligence
as well as the spelling quiz? What if we learn about compassion and not just the
compass? What if we focus on attitude as much as we did on our aptitude?
Life is disguised as an exam, but it is more like a practice test. When you make
mistakes, learn from them, and any missed takes can be taken again. When I
took the bar exam, niingon gyud ko, Lord kon makapasar, take oath. Kon dili
makapasar, take oath-ro. Don’t be limited by society. Your path is unique, don’t
trade it for less. Life is the most difficult exam, most people fail because they are
looking at someone else’s desk.
God bless you on your post Misamis University examinations called life.
