What professional nursing meeting(s) did you attend and where was it located?
Nursing quality outcomes council (NQOC) at St. Mary’s Hospital
Background
Describe the purpose of this professional nursing meeting? Describe the agendas of the group and subgroup. What
type of issues did they address?
This council identifies initiative to advance professional practice and impact outcomes.
Some of the topics that were discussed at this meeting were:
1. Fall rates
2. HAI’s
3. NDNQI results
4. Better ways to handle their broken equipment/furniture
5. Centralized staffing and scheduling changes
6. How to get the night shift committee more involved
Noticing
What did you notice about the professional nursing meeting initially? Describe what you saw, heard and did during
the meeting?
Initially, it seemed to me everyone wasn’t very overly friendly with each other. I wasn’t sure if anyone
knew each other, or if they worked together. I really wasn’t sure what this meeting was all about when I
first walked in. During the meeting, I sat around the outskirts and just listened and took notes on everything
they were discussing.
Interpreting
Describe what you thought about the information being discussed. Have you been involved in similar discussion
during your previous student nurse experiences? Describe the similarities and/or differences to those encounters.
Honestly, I had never been to a meeting that discussed “problems” such as falls, infections etc. It was really
eye opening to hear nurses come together and collaborate on ways they can help decrease numbers. The
other professional meeting I’ve attended in my student career was more of a business type meeting where
they just discussed like what was going on and then there was a presentation. This meeting was different
because everyone had input during this meeting. I loved hearing how certain units were doing “this” to
decrease “this”. It was definitely a collaborative meeting to increase outcomes throughout the whole
hospital, and it was very cool.
Responding
Describe stresses (both positive & negative) you experienced as you responded to the new learning or the challenge.

I can’t really think of any stressors I experienced during this meeting. I really just learned a lot about how
the hospital can always be better in thinking of new idea to better outcomes from things. I think the
challenge probably would be that sometimes people aren’t complying with what they are putting out or
testing to improve outcomes, so it becomes frustrating when they’re trying their best to improve the
outcome of something, but they need compliance for that to happen.
Reflection-in-Action
What role would you take being assigned to represent your unit in this group? What subcommittee would you like to
participate with and why?
I would probably take on the role of just coming up with new ideas on things, and maybe encourage other
members to bring it back to their unit to test out and let us know how it goes. I would love to be a surveyor
of some sort, just to sort through all of the answers and figure out if the outcomes are getting better or not.
What written evidence is available to support professional nursing groups and their impact on the development of
evidence based practice and improved patient outcomes. Cite/reference all journal articles that contributed to the
evidence.
I had a hard time finding things that truly support that nursing groups have impact on the development f
evidence based practice, but we all know they do. One example I could find was the central line bundle that
has been implemented in many hospitals nationwide, due to an increase in CLABSI’s. I feel that the NQOC
could have been the main council to have brought this into place in a hospital, because they are on the
forefront taking care of the patients. They know what’s going on at the line of service. Therefore, they
probably have a very good idea about things that may not be new to the world, but can be new to the
hospital.

What is the value of professional nursing meetings both as a part of a healthcare system and within a professional
organization?
As a part of the healthcare system, professional nursing meetings can transform practice and change our
patient’s outcome, therefore bettering the healthcare system all around. As for within a professional
organization professional nursing meetings help advocate for the nurses in their needs, wants, and helps
them put forth ideas that may better the nursing practice and profession as a whole.
After this meeting, I realized that our voices really do matter. So, every time someone asks me to take a
survey, I will. Even if sometimes it stills feel like I’m a tiny voice in a sea of people, I know that my
opinions and my answers on that survey will be taken in consideration, and that what I have to say, matters.
