1.2 SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The ATIS system provides service for broadcasting of ATIS voice messages. The ATIS
voice messages are based on data received from AFTN or AWOS system as METARs
and SPECIs and from text entered by the ATIS operator. The ATIS system generates
the ATIS voice messages by concatenating recorded words of human speech or
optionally by using synthesized speech.
The ATIS system is either a single server or a dual server configuration with one or
more client PCs attached via a LAN. The client software is also installed on the servers
so that the system can remain fully operational even if the client PC is failing.

1.3 Block Diagram

1.3.1

Figure 2-1-2 ATIS Dual Server Block diagram

A short description of the systems mode of operation is given here, based on the Block
Diagram above, Figure 2-1-2:
The two PCs named ATIS A and ATIS B together makes up the heart of the system.
They run the ATIS system software, which is described in chapter 4. The Client PCs
named ROP (Remote Operator Position) only contains the client part of the software
(Only one ROP is shown).

The PC’s are linked together in a LAN using a network Hub/Switch.

The AFTN/AWOS system is connected to the ATIS system via the Communication
switch to the X.25 synchronous serial port on ATIS A and ATIS B. The Communication
switch connects the AFTN system to the active (Main) server. One server is active
(main) at a given time, the other acting as a standby. Switching over from the main
server to the standby takes place if a fatal alarm occurs on the active server. From a
ROP PC the user can also manually force a Server switchover. Speech output from the
Sound Card is passed to the Audio Distribution Unit, which joins the signal from ATIS A
and ATIS B. The left channel is passed to a pre-listen loudspeaker, and the right
channel output is split into 5 separate outputs. One output is passed to the Radio
Transmitter and a second output can be optionally passed to other equipment like a
Voice Recorder Unit.

It is only the main server that generates the Broadcast speech output; thus the standby
server is silent.
The ROP PC’s internal loudspeaker is used to give audible alarms in case of error in
input data, hardware or software malfunction.

1.3.5 Communication Distribution Frame:
The Communication distribution frame consists of a number of modules each with its own type of
interface and connector. The most common type of interfaces in the ATIS/VOLMET system is serial
communication ports. There are two types of serial communication ports in the system: RS422 and
RS232. Besides these two communication interfaces there can be some other special interfaces like
X.25. The switching is controlled by the Main/Standby Unit (MSU) which is connected to RS232 ports on
server A and B via the RJ45 connectors at the back of the frame.
RS232 and RS422 interface cards are connected to external equipment on the front of the modules and are
connected to RS232 ports on the server using the RJ45 connectors at the back. The X.25 cards have both
external connection and server connections on the front of the module.

Figure 2-2 Process Level diagram

As shown in the Figure 2-2, the system is modular and the following text will explain all
the processes – starting with the incoming data.
All inter-process/service communication is done via TCP stream sockets.
1.4.1 Main Control Service
The Main Control Service process av_ctrl is the heart of the ATIS system. The process

is divided into the following tasks:

− Translation. When an update of a new broadcast is received from a HMI Client, the

ATIS is translated into a synthesised text block in the case of synthesised speech or

into a list of numbers from the data-dictionary, each indicating a unique pre-recorded

wave-file, in the case of pre-recorded speech. The Audio Service process then

constructs the resulting speech output before transmission.

− ATIS Message Distribution. ATIS Messages received from the MET Service

process are distributed to all connected HMI Clients.

− Alarm Manager. All generated alarms are handled and distributed to all connected

clients (HMI/RCM). The operators on the clients can then take appropriate action

according to the generated alarms. All alarms are reported to all connected clients.

Alarms get cleared from clients.

− Main/Standby Controller. When the ATIS system is configured as a Dual Server the

individual Server’s state is either Main or Standby depending on the other Server’s

state. Any fatal alarm on the Main Server will force a switchover and the Standby

Server will then be the Main Server. The faulty server can then be taken out of

service for maintenance.

1.4.2 Audio Service

The Audio Service process av_aud accesses the sound card API. The process is

responsible for streaming audio (speech) broadcasts, both to the transmitter and the

pre-listen loudspeakers. This process also handles recording of new phrases in a pre-

recording operation mode.

1.4.3 HMI Client

The Human Machine Interface, HMI Client, is the operator interface to the ATIS system.

From here it is possible to enter a manual broadcast, amend automatically received

broadcasts and change settings for the system. The HMI client can either run on the

same computational unit as the server or on another machine connected to the server

via a network. The HMI is described in [USM].

1.4.4 RCM Client – (Optional)

The optional Remote Control and Monitoring program, RCM, is used to view the status

of the ATIS system. The RCM program can either run on the same computational unit

as the server or on another machine connected to the server via a network.

1.4.5 Telephone service – (Optional)

The Telephone Service process av_phone accesses the internal or external Voice

Modem. The process is responsible for answering the phone and play a copy of the

actual broadcast on the telephone line when someone calls the modem.

CHAPTER - 2
OPERATOR’S GUIDE
2 INTRODUCTION

This document is the User’s Guide to the Terma ATIS system.

The ATISPLUS is designed for the Windows 2000/XP operating system.

2.1 General

This document deals in general with all aspects concerning the operation of the Terma

ATISPLUS equipment and software package.

The basic function of the ATISPLUS is to convert entered text and received data from

external sources to spoken text, which is transmitted to the aeroplanes via radio

transmitters.

This document describes the standard ATISPLUS. Some systems are custom made and

therefore supplied without one or more components, e.g. supplied without speech

synthesiser or not as a fully redundant system.

Whether the ATISPLUS system is standard supply or customised, the operating principle

for the system is basically the same.

The ATISPLUS system accepts data from external sources e.g. METAR data from AFTN

and uses these data for weather information in the ATIS broadcast. In addition it is

possible to manually enter data directly. This is used to e.g. change runway or manually

enter all data if no external sources are available.

The ATISPLUS has user administration features. An administrator can create user groups

with dedicated rights. Users can then be assigned to one or more groups.

The system can be based on either pre-recorded voice and/or synthesised voice.

This document explains how the system will run, seen from the HMI (Human Machine

Interface), including alarm handling, and other relevant aspects.

2.2 Terminology

In the rest of this manual the following terminology is used:

− “Click X” or “Click the X button”: Move the mouse pointer to inside the button-like

field in the window marked “X” and press the left mouse button (or its equivalent on

the trackball).

− “Double-click...” As above, but press the left mouse button fast twice.

In instructions...

− Numbered instructions indicate a sequence to be followed.

− Bulleted instructions indicate a choice between options.

2.3 ATIS PLUS

Each entry in the “MET”- list shows the “MET”-type (METAR, MET REP etc.), the

location (can be an airport id or runway id depending on the bulletin type) and a timeout

value.
The timeout value is given in minutes and controls the time period where the bulletin can

reside in the system without being updated.

NOTE: Configuration of MET-bulletins accepted by the system cannot be done

through the HMI.

2.11.4 Accept or Undo Changes

Changes made in the tab page, can either be accepted or undone:

Accept: Click to activate the changes made

After the system has been updated, the changes can be seen in the left pane of the

“Admin Manager”-window.
MET MANAGER

Fig. 6-1 MET Manager

The MET Manager window is arranged in two areas:

MET List The MET List contains the correct validated meteorological
messages which are used to update the ATIS. A message is
typically a METAR, but depending on system configuration other
messages like METREP may be supported. These data are
received from MET-stations and alternatively other input sources,
configured for the ATISPLUS system. Data received is in coded
form, as received from the input processes. The data in coded
form can be edited in the “MET Editor”-window.
- Mark the entry you wish to edit and click the “Edit”-
button to open the “MET Editor”-window (see section
6.1).
MET Error List The MET Error List contains messages that failed the validation.
The user can edit the erroneous message and correct any errors,
or choose to discard the message. The ATIS will continue to
broadcast previous data until the erroneous message is corrected
or a new one is received.
- Mark the entry you wish to edit and click the “Edit”-
button to open the “MET Editor”-window (see section
6.1).
− Mark the entry you wish to edit and click the “Edit”-
button to open the “MET Editor”-window (see
section 10.1).

2.12 MET Editor

Bulletins displayed in the MET List or the MET Error List can be edited using the MET

Editor.

Fig. 10-2 MET Editor

The editor is a simple text editor in which it is possible to modify or correct data received

by the ATISPLUS system’s input processes, in order to build an ATIS broadcast.

There are four buttons in the right side of the window, which have the following features:

Undo Clicking the “Undo”-button will revert all changes made after the bulletin
was corrected and “Compiled” last time.
Discard Mark the actual bulletin and click “DISCARD”. The bulletin will now be
removed, and the system will now continue with the “old” bulletin.
The “DISCARD”-button is only available when a bulletin with errors is
received.
Compile After the amending of the bulletin, click the “COMPILE”-button. During
the compilation the bulletin is checked by the system and upon a
successful completion, the “Update”-button at the top becomes available.
Upon a non-successful completion of the compilation, the “Update”-
button will not be available. The error will be highlighted in the text, and a
short error description will be displayed in the field above. After editing
the error, click the “COMPILE”-button again.

Update Upon a successful completion of the compilation, the “Update”-button

becomes available. Clicking the “Update”-button closes the “MET Editor”-
window, and opens the “MET Manager”-window. The “new” bulletin will
now be displayed in the “MET List”-area.
Close Clicking the “CLOSE”-button, closes the “MET Editor”- window, and
opens the “MET Manager”- window.

2.13 ATIS MANAGER

Clicking the “ATIS”-button in the top menu opens the “ATIS Manager (Current)-window.

There are two types of ATIS windows in the Terma ATIS system:

Current The current ATIS broadcast window shows the ATIS broadcast being
transmitted at the moment.
Pending The pending ATIS broadcast window is ATIS broadcast under
preparation. The pending ATIS broadcast can be put into service
manually or automatically. This option is set via the “Update Mode”-radio
button in the “Admin Manager”-window (see section 9.1.4)

2.13.3.2 ATIS Manager (Pending) /Free Text Window

The intended use of the free text feature is for non-routine ATIS broadcasts when

necessity calls for any message to be broadcasted immediately e.g.:

“The airport is closed due to construction work.”

Fig 11-7 ATIS Manager (Pending) – Free text

To compose a free text in the window, do the following steps:

1. The system gets the predefined information from C:\atis\cfg\Prestored.dat. It is

possible to change the information in this file. Open the ”.dat”-file with the Microsoft

“Notepad”-program.

Each entry in Prestored.dat consists of two parts. The first part consists of one line of

text and the first character must be a $-sign. This line serves as an abbreviation for

the following line(s) and is the text shown in the glossary list when right-clicking the

mouse in the free-text window. The second part consists of one or more lines of text

and is the actual text inserted in the free-text area when selecting an item from the

glossary list. After editing the text save the document as Prestored.dat in

C:\atis\cfg\. The HMI must be restarted for the new entries to be selectable.
2. Click the “COMPILE”-button.

The system will try to parse (decode) the message. All text entered in the fields will

become green or red. The green colour indicates that the text is recognized by the

system, and the red text indicates that the text is unrecognisable.

When pre-recorded speech is used the broadcast cannot be updated if any words

are marked red. Either an alternative phrase must be used or the required phrases

must be recorded using the “Record” feature.

When synthesized speech is used, the broadcast can always be updated, but text

marked with red may not be pronounced correctly, especially if an abbreviated

phrase is used.

3. When the information can be spoken, the ATIS broadcast is ready for update.
