InTASC 5 Reflection
The fifth Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC)
standard focuses on the application of content. The standard is, “the teacher understands how to
connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity,
and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.”1 This standard
reminds teachers of the importance of making connections to real-world topics and other content
areas. As a social studies teacher, this can be difficult when it comes to history. However,
something like the Civil War that ended in 1865 is still relevant in the United States in 2018. An
example I could give students of this relevancy to make these real-world connections could be
the riot in Charlottesville, Virginia that took place in 2017. This would help engage students and
give them a different perspective on the Civil War as it is still affecting our world today.
In order to put this standard into action, I think teachers need to work together to find
connections across their content areas. For example, when I am teaching a unit on World War II,
the English teacher could have his or her students read Night by Elie Wiesel. This could give
students a different perspective on the Holocaust by having them read an excerpt from a

survivor. However, this is easier said than done. I think this would be easier to do in a middle
school setting as teachers can teach more than one content area.
Giving students examples and helping them identify real world problems, issues, or
themes can help them expand their knowledge and grow as not only students but global citizens.
It is part of my job as a social studies teacher to educate my students on how to be good, global
citizens and this can be achieved by relating the content to present day issues.
