PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 General instructions

1.1.1 Works of this Section shall be governed by Conditions of the Contract and
Preliminaries Specifications.

1.2 Works included

1.6 Design requirements

1.6.1 Design pedestrian traffic areaway grating and catwalk assemblies to safely
support minimum live load of 488.3kg/m2 evenly distributed over grating
sections with maximum deflection of L/240 in accordance with safe load
tables of ANSI/NAAMM AMP MBG 531, latest edition.

1.7 Submittals

1.7.1 Shop drawings:

1.7.1.1 Submit shop drawings in accordance with conditions of the Contract and
Preliminaries Specification – Submittals (CSI Ref 01300), indicating the
following minimum information:-

1.7.1.1.1 Product identification and finishes, thickness, dimensions.

1.7.1.1.2 Engineering confirmation of grating design to support specified design


loads.

1.7.1.1.3 Grating sizes and fixing details.

1.7.1.1.4 Forming details.

1.7.1.1.5 Frame sizes, and frame anchorage details.

1.7.1.1.6 Interfaces with the Works of other Sections.

1.7.1.2 Subcontractor’s Structural Engineer shall stamp and sign each shop
drawing ensuring that the assemblies specified in 1.7.1 of this Section are
provided in accordance with the engineer’s design.

1.7.1.3 The Metal Gratings Subcontractor’s Structural Engineer shall review and
coordinate shop drawings with Subcontractors of interfacing work specified
to ensure proper inter-relationship of the Works of this Section with other
Subcontracts.

1.7.2 Safety data sheets:

1.7.2.1 Submit safety data sheets in accordance with the Conditions of the
Contract and Preliminaries Specification – Submittals (CSI Ref 01300).

1.7.2.2 Submit safety data sheets for inclusion with project record documents.
Keep one (1) copy of safety data sheets on Site for reference by workers.

1.8 Quality assurance

1.8.1 Works of this Section shall comply with the requirements of NAAMM AMP
555, latest edition, ANSI/NAAMM AMP MBG 531, 532 and 533 and as
specified herein.

1.8.2 Qualifications:

1.8.2.1 Subcontractor executing the Works of this Section shall have minimum of
five (5) years continuous experience, in the Country, in successful
manufacture/fabrication and installation of work type and quality shown
and specified herein. Submit documentary evidence of experience upon
the Engineer’s instructions.

1.8.2.2 Works of this Section shall be performed by Subcontractor thoroughly


conversant with referenced standards, laws, by-laws and regulations which
govern, and capable of workmanship of best grade of modern shop and
field practice known to recognized manufacturer’s specializing in this type
of work.

1.8.2.3 Works of this Section shall be undertaken by workers especially trained


and experienced in this type of Works. A full time, senior, qualified
technical representative shall be posted at the site to direct the Works of
this Section.

1.8.2.4 Where instructed by the Engineer, submit details of projects with locations,
names of Owner(s) and Engineer where the products specified have been
used previously and performed satisfactorily, date it was installed, and size
of installation.

1.8.3 Regulatory requirements:

1.8.3.1 A professional Structural Engineer registered in the Country shall be


appointed to design components of the exterior metal gratings requiring
structural performance. This Engineer shall be responsible for determining
frame and grating sizes, and loading of components in accordance with
applicable codes and regulations. This Engineer shall review and sign
each shop drawing.

1.8.3.2 Design structural support and anchoring system to maintain profiles,


configurations and layout as indicated on the Drawings. Modify or alter
Engineer’s details to meet fabricator’s design requirements subject to
review and acceptance by the Engineer.

1.9 Work Programme

1.9.1 Co-ordinate as necessary with other Subcontractors and proceed with


Works of this Section as rapidly as Project conditions permit.

1.9.2 Supply grating frames to be cast-in-place in concrete, in ample time to be


incorporated into the concrete Works, together with measurements and
other information required for location of same.

1.10 Delivery, storage, handling and protection

1.10.1 Coordinate deliveries to comply with project construction programme and


arrange in timely manner for strategic off the ground, under cover storage
facility. Do not load any area beyond the plot limits.

1.10.2 Adequately protect and crate all components against damage, dirt,
disfigurement and weather during delivery and storage. Replace products
damaged during delivery, storage and handling as instructed by Engineer.

1.10.3 Protect products from damage and moisture. Provide non-staining blocking
and protective covers. Protect holes and reglets from water and dew
accumulation.

1.10.4 Cover and protect the Works of other Sections in the area of the Works of
this Section from damage. Make good all damage to the satisfaction of the
Engineer.

1.10.5 Protect the installed Works of this Section on completion from the Works of
other Sections and damage where incurred shall be repaired to the

complete satisfaction of the Engineer.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 General

2.1.1 Products specified are to establish type and level of performance and
quality required and are not intended to restrict submission for alternatives
in accordance with the requirements of Preliminaries Specification –
Materials and Equipment (CSI Ref 01600).

2.1.2 Acceptance of products from other than listed manufacturers will be


subject to review by the Engineer, for conformity with the specifications
and meeting the physical characteristics of the specified products. During
this review of alternative products the Engineer will require submission of
technical data verifying that all specified standards and products are met,
submission of alternative profile samples similar to that detailed, and a list
of successfully completed projects of similar size and nature in the last five
(5) years in the Country. Include compliance with referenced standards.
Submittals which do not contain proper information for the product
evaluation will not be considered.

2.1.3 The Contractor shall not include any alternatives and shall conform to the
requirements of the specification Section. Substitutions shall be clearly
identified in accordance with the requirements of Preliminaries
Specification – Materials and Equipment (CSI Ref 01600).

2.2 Steel

2.2.1 Steel grating:

2.2.1.1 Welded steel bar type grating and heavy duty type steel bar grating having
bearing bars at maximum 30mm on centres and cross bars at maximum
100mm centres, depths and thicknesses as required to support design
requirements loadings and conforming to ANSI/NA.AMM AMP MBG 531
and MBG 532.

2.2.1.2 Provide Grade 316 stainless steel saddle type clips and fasteners for
gratings. Stainless steel shall conform to BS 1449, Part 2, Grade 316.

2.2.2 Bars, angles, structural shapes and plates:

2.2.2.1 Low carbon type, structural quality steel conforming to BS EN 10025, BS


EN 10113 and BS EN 10137- Part 1, 2, 3, 4.

2.2.3 Steel welding materials:

2.2.3.1 Gas welding filler materials shall conform to BS 1453. Gas shielded arc
welding filler rods and wires shall conform to BS EN 440 and BS EN 1668.
Arc welding electrodes shall conform to BS EN 757 and BS EN 758,
whichever are applicable. TIG welding rods shall conform to BS EN 1668.

2.3 Galvanizing

2.3.1 Hot dip galvanizing:

2.3.1.1 Steel shall be hot-dip galvanized after fabrication of individual components


in conformance with BS 729 and BS EN ISO 1461 having average
minimum 140 microns coating thickness. Welding of galvanized material
will not be permitted.

2.4 Zinc rich paint

2.4.1 Ready mixed, high percentage zinc-rich type primer paint conforming to
ASTM A123 and A780.

2.5 Separator sheet

2.5.1 2mm thick neoprene rubber sheet.

2.6 Bituminous paint (isolation coating)

2.6.1 Brush or spray grade type conforming to BS 6949.

2.7 Butyl tape

2.7.1 Extruded, non-drying, non-skinning, non-oxidizing, reinforced,


polyisobutylene butyl tape of sufficient width and thickness (3mm
thickness).

2.8 Fabrication

2.8.1 Fit and assemble Works of this Section in workshop where possible.
Perform Works of this Section in accordance with details, reviewed shop
drawings, NAAMM AMP 555 and as specified herein.

2.8.2 Record measurements at the Site for Works of this Section which is to fit
or be connected to steel, concrete framing or masonry, before
commencing fabrication.

2.8.3 Where shop fabrication is not possible, make trial assembly in shop.

2.8.4 Shop fabricate, finish and assemble items subject to transport and
handling constraints. Minimize assembly at the Site.

2.8.5 Welds shall be continuous seam welds unless specified otherwise.

2.8.6 Grind sharp edges and corners smooth and round slightly. Grind welds
smooth and flush with surface of parent metal, where exposed to view and
where specifically indicated on the Drawings.

2.8.7 Provide adequate reinforcing, fastenings, anchors, accessories required


for fabrication and erection of the Works of this Section. Such items
occurring on or in an exterior wall or slab shall be Grade 316 stainless
steel. Thread dimensions shall be such that nuts and bolts will fit without
rethreading or chasing threads.

2.8.8 Fabricate, drill and tap members to accommodate attachments, anchorage


and the Works of other Sections where located and directed by the latter.

2.8.9 Field apply isolation coating to metals in contact with dissimilar metals and
cementitious materials e.g. concrete, masonry, mortar and plaster. Use
separator sheet where aluminium is fastened to steel.

2.8.10 Grating frames:

2.8.10.1 For steel gratings, fabricate continuous steel angle grating frames with
3mm thick x 25mm wide x 200mm long hooked steel bar strap anchors,
welded to back of angle frames at maximum 600mm on centres and not
greater than 450mm from corners.

2.8.10.2 Grating frame depth shall suit depth of grating required at each location,
ensuring that top of angle frame shall be flush with top of grating.

2.8.10.3 Provide structural intermediate supports as required to meet design


requirements.

2.8.10.4 Steel welding methods:

2.8.10.4.1 Arc welding shall conform to BS EN 288-2 and 3, and BS EN 25817,


whichever are applicable. Fusion welding shall conform to BS EN 287, BS
EN 288-1, BS EN 729 and BS 4872, Part 1, whichever is applicable. TIG
welding shall conform to BS 3019.

2.8.10.4.2 Only certified welders, shall be engaged to carry out the work.

2.8.10.5 Aluminum welding methods:

2.8.10.5.1 Arc welding shall conform to BS EN 288- 4 and BS EN 30042. Fusion


welding shall conform to BS EN 287-2. MIG welding shall conform to BS
3571, Part I and BS 4872, Part 2. TIG welding shall conform to BS 3019,
Part 1 and BS 4872, Part 2.

2.8.10.5.2 Work shall be performed only by certified welders.

2.8.11 Grating:

2.8.11.1 Fabricate grating in sections to permit easy handling and to suit grating
supports, spacing.

2.8.11 .2 Provide intermediate support framing to support each grating section,


consistent with loading conditions.

2.8.11.3 At junctions of sections provide 6 mm thick bearing bars spanning across


openings. Band all edges and open ends of steel grating sections.

2.8.11.4 Attach grating to frames with saddle clips and vandal resistant bolts to
prevent removal except by tool.

2.8.11.5 Weld grating in accordance with requirements of ANSI/NAAMM AMP MBG

533, latest edition.

2.8.12 Co-ordinate delivery and placing of items to be built into concrete and
masonry to suit work sequence of other sections. Supply framing to
Concrete Subcontractor for casting-in-place.

2.9 Finishes

2.9.1 Steel:

2.9.2 Unless specified otherwise, hot dip galvanize ferrous metals including
ferrous metal products after fabrication.

2.9.3 Apply zinc rich paint at minimum 23 microns (0.9 mils) average dry film
thickness (DFT) to all damaged and abraided surfaces.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 Examination and preparation

3.1.1 Examine thoroughly substrate surfaces to receive the Works of this


Section and ensure that the Works done as part of the Works of other
Sections are complete and that there are no conditions which will
adversely affect the performance of the Works of this Section.

3.1.2 The Subcontractor shall be responsible to verify the accuracy and


alignment of structural framing to which the Works of this Section is
connected.

3.1.3 Notify the Contractor of any unsatisfactory conditions. Do not proceed with
the Works of this Section until unsatisfactory conditions have been rectified
or removed. Commencement of the Works of this Section implies
acceptance of surfaces and conditions, by Sub Contractor.

3.2 Location and details

3.2.1 Refer to the Drawings for locations of hot dip galvanized pedestrian traffic
areaway grating.

3.3 Installation

3.3.1 Fix in position, areaway grating, Ground floor/Roof level gratings and
catwalks in strict accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions
and, reviewed and accepted shop drawings.

3.3.2 Provide adequate reinforcing and anchorage to ensure a rigid installation.

3.3.3 Install areaway grating in Ground floor and Roof level and catwalks true to
dimensions, square, plumb, level, rattle-free and free from distortion or
defects detrimental to appearance and performance.

3.3.4 Fasten areaway grating in Ground floor and Roof level and catwalks to
framing with saddle clips and vandal resistant bolts to prevent removal
except by tool.

3.4 Cleaning

3.4.1 On a daily basis and as the Works of this Section proceed, remove and
dispose of all debris resulting from the Works of this Section.

3.4.2 Leave work areas of the Works of this Section broom clean at the end of
each work day.

3.5 Clear up

3.5.1 Remove excess debris and products from the Site, upon completion.
Discharge as directed by Engineer.
