PART 1 GENERAL
1.1.1 Works of this Section shall be governed by Conditions of the Contract and
Preliminaries Specifications.
1.2.1.1 Interior metal grating as indicated on the Drawings and specified herein.
1.2.1.2 Secondary steel angle framing and Main structural steel support elements
for metal grating as indicated on the Drawings and Specified herein.
1.3.1 Supply steel framing for metal gratings to Concrete Subcontractor for
setting into concrete, slab or Sub-Floor.

1.6.1 Design pedestrian traffic areaway grating and catwalk assemblies to safely
support minimum live load of 488.3kg/m2 evenly distributed over grating
sections with maximum deflection of L/240 in accordance with safe load
tables of ANSI/NAAMM AMP MBG 531, latest edition.

1.7.1.1 Submit shop drawings in accordance with conditions of the Contract and
Preliminaries Specification – Submittals (CSI Ref 01300), indicating the
following minimum information:-
1.7.1.2 Subcontractor’s Structural Engineer shall stamp and sign each shop
drawing ensuring that the assemblies specified in 1.7.1 of this Section are
provided in accordance with the engineer’s design.
1.7.1.3 The Metal Gratings Subcontractor’s Structural Engineer shall review and
coordinate shop drawings with Subcontractors of interfacing work specified
to ensure proper inter-relationship of the Works of this Section with other
Subcontracts.
1.7.2.1 Submit safety data sheets in accordance with the Conditions of the
Contract and Preliminaries Specification – Submittals (CSI Ref 01300).
1.7.2.2 Submit safety data sheets for inclusion with project record documents.
Keep one (1) copy of safety data sheets on Site for reference by workers.
1.8.1 Works of this Section shall comply with the requirements of NAAMM AMP
555, latest edition, ANSI/NAAMM AMP MBG 531, 532 and 533 and as
specified herein.
1.8.2 Qualifications:
1.8.2.1 Subcontractor executing the Works of this Section shall have minimum of
five (5) years continuous experience, in the Country, in successful
manufacture/fabrication and installation of work type and quality shown
and specified herein. Submit documentary evidence of experience upon
the Engineer’s instructions.
1.8.2.4 Where instructed by the Engineer, submit details of projects with locations,
names of Owner(s) and Engineer where the products specified have been
used previously and performed satisfactorily, date it was installed, and size
of installation.
1.10.2 Adequately protect and crate all components against damage, dirt,
disfigurement and weather during delivery and storage. Replace products
damaged during delivery, storage and handling as instructed by Engineer.
1.10.3 Protect products from damage and moisture. Provide non-staining blocking
and protective covers. Protect holes and reglets from water and dew
accumulation.
1.10.4 Cover and protect the Works of other Sections in the area of the Works of
this Section from damage. Make good all damage to the satisfaction of the
Engineer.
1.10.5 Protect the installed Works of this Section on completion from the Works of
other Sections and damage where incurred shall be repaired to the

PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 General
2.1.1 Products specified are to establish type and level of performance and
quality required and are not intended to restrict submission for alternatives
in accordance with the requirements of Preliminaries Specification –
Materials and Equipment (CSI Ref 01600).
2.1.3 The Contractor shall not include any alternatives and shall conform to the
requirements of the specification Section. Substitutions shall be clearly
identified in accordance with the requirements of Preliminaries
Specification – Materials and Equipment (CSI Ref 01600).
2.2 Steel
2.2.1.1 Welded steel bar type grating and heavy duty type steel bar grating having
bearing bars at maximum 30mm on centres and cross bars at maximum
100mm centres, depths and thicknesses as required to support design
requirements loadings and conforming to ANSI/NA.AMM AMP MBG 531
and MBG 532.
2.2.1.2 Provide Grade 316 stainless steel saddle type clips and fasteners for
gratings. Stainless steel shall conform to BS 1449, Part 2, Grade 316.
2.2.3.1 Gas welding filler materials shall conform to BS 1453. Gas shielded arc
welding filler rods and wires shall conform to BS EN 440 and BS EN 1668.
Arc welding electrodes shall conform to BS EN 757 and BS EN 758,
whichever are applicable. TIG welding rods shall conform to BS EN 1668.

2.3 Galvanizing
2.4.1 Ready mixed, high percentage zinc-rich type primer paint conforming to
ASTM A123 and A780.
2.8 Fabrication
2.8.1 Fit and assemble Works of this Section in workshop where possible.
Perform Works of this Section in accordance with details, reviewed shop
drawings, NAAMM AMP 555 and as specified herein.
2.8.2 Record measurements at the Site for Works of this Section which is to fit
or be connected to steel, concrete framing or masonry, before
commencing fabrication.
2.8.3 Where shop fabrication is not possible, make trial assembly in shop.
2.8.4 Shop fabricate, finish and assemble items subject to transport and
handling constraints. Minimize assembly at the Site.
2.8.6 Grind sharp edges and corners smooth and round slightly. Grind welds
smooth and flush with surface of parent metal, where exposed to view and
where specifically indicated on the Drawings.
2.8.9 Field apply isolation coating to metals in contact with dissimilar metals and
cementitious materials e.g. concrete, masonry, mortar and plaster. Use
separator sheet where aluminium is fastened to steel.
2.8.10.1 For steel gratings, fabricate continuous steel angle grating frames with
3mm thick x 25mm wide x 200mm long hooked steel bar strap anchors,
welded to back of angle frames at maximum 600mm on centres and not
greater than 450mm from corners.
2.8.10.2 Grating frame depth shall suit depth of grating required at each location,
ensuring that top of angle frame shall be flush with top of grating.
2.8.10.4.2 Only certified welders, shall be engaged to carry out the work.
2.8.11 Grating:
2.8.11.1 Fabricate grating in sections to permit easy handling and to suit grating
supports, spacing.
2.8.11.4 Attach grating to frames with saddle clips and vandal resistant bolts to
prevent removal except by tool.

2.8.12 Co-ordinate delivery and placing of items to be built into concrete and
masonry to suit work sequence of other sections. Supply framing to
Concrete Subcontractor for casting-in-place.
2.9 Finishes
2.9.1 Steel:
2.9.2 Unless specified otherwise, hot dip galvanize ferrous metals including
ferrous metal products after fabrication.
2.9.3 Apply zinc rich paint at minimum 23 microns (0.9 mils) average dry film
thickness (DFT) to all damaged and abraided surfaces.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1.3 Notify the Contractor of any unsatisfactory conditions. Do not proceed with
the Works of this Section until unsatisfactory conditions have been rectified
or removed. Commencement of the Works of this Section implies
acceptance of surfaces and conditions, by Sub Contractor.
3.2.1 Refer to the Drawings for locations of hot dip galvanized pedestrian traffic
areaway grating.
3.3 Installation
3.3.1 Fix in position, areaway grating, Ground floor/Roof level gratings and
catwalks in strict accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions
and, reviewed and accepted shop drawings.
3.3.3 Install areaway grating in Ground floor and Roof level and catwalks true to
dimensions, square, plumb, level, rattle-free and free from distortion or
defects detrimental to appearance and performance.
3.3.4 Fasten areaway grating in Ground floor and Roof level and catwalks to
framing with saddle clips and vandal resistant bolts to prevent removal
except by tool.

3.4 Cleaning
3.4.1 On a daily basis and as the Works of this Section proceed, remove and
dispose of all debris resulting from the Works of this Section.
3.4.2 Leave work areas of the Works of this Section broom clean at the end of
each work day.
3.5 Clear up
3.5.1 Remove excess debris and products from the Site, upon completion.
Discharge as directed by Engineer.
