Abbreviated Lesson Plan

UNIT TITLE Kooky Kombinations
GRADE LEVEL Elementary (3rd Grade)
DURATION 45 minutes for 3 days
The desired outcome would be a functioning and well crafted thaumatrope that successfully
combines two student interests.

SAMPLE

Oftentimes, when one asks a student to define art, the immediate answer is painting or
drawing. This limited view of art can continue into adulthood. Kooky Kombinations will allow
students to be aware of the numerous ways that art impacts them everyday. Animation is a

current artform that interests the majority of students and can help them connect what they
are learning in the art room to their personal context. Also, elementary students typically draw
in narrative format and this lesson will allow them to apply their skill in a new way.
This lesson’s central focus in art in the everyday and specifically animation. Students will be able

1.) Students will be able to trace and cut out a circle and attach the dowel rod to the paper in a
clean manner.
2.) Students will ​create​ a thaumatrope that ​demonstrates​ skill and expression in the use of art
OBJECTIVE(S) techniques and processes. They will be able to combine two separate ideas that are
fun/important to them into a successful animated idea by day three of the project.
3.) Students will ​provide​ examples of how they encounter art and artists in everyday life by
brainstorming ideas for their piece with their peers according to a worksheet.

Animation - Art that moves


Motion- Changes in direction
- 6 cups to trace
- 20 pairs of scissors
- 20 straws or dowel rod (10 ft)
- 10 sheets of printer paper
- Glue sticks
- Pencils
RESOURCES
- 6 rolls of tape
MATERIALS
- Erasers
EQUIPMENT
- Sharpies (variety of colors)
- Colored pencils
- Computer and projector with presentation
- 20 printed copies of the rubric and worksheet
- Tools for adaptation: circle punch, drill without bit (to spin animation), large handled
brush and white glue, devices to make mark-making handles larger (Sharpies/Pencils)
1.) Students will produce at least one functioning and well crafted thaumatrope that
successfully combines two student interests.
2.) Students will complete their worksheet and give at least two examples of art that they
ASSESSMENT see in their everyday lives.
Formative: The teacher will walk around to ensure students understand what they need to be
doing. The teacher will answer questions and help students in any way necessary.
Summative: This will occurs through a rubric and worksheet.

Day Activities

1 10 min: Introductory presentation with student participation


10 min: Model how to fill out the worksheet and have student volunteer pass out the worksheets
20 min: Students fill in their worksheet while teacher walks around and answers questions
5 min: Clean up and collect brainstorming sheets

2 5 min: Pass out brainstorming sheet and other supplies (paper, scissors, colored pencils. markers)
5 min: Circle cutting - teacher demonstration (write directions on board)
10 min: Students cut out their circles and the teacher walks around the room to answer questions
5 min: Drawing - teacher demonstration (write directions on board)
15: Students draw on their circles
5 min: Clean up and collect in-process projects and brainstorming worksheets

3 5 min: Pass out projects and supplies (tape, glue, colored pencils, markers, straws)
5 min: Taping/gluing demonstration (also write directions on board)
20 min: Students finish their drawings and glue the circles to a dowel rod
10 min: Student volunteers share their projects with the rest of the class
5 min: Students clean up and teacher collects the final projects
