Title Destroying Chemical Bonds

Subject Area(s) Chemistry
Grade Level High School
Summary of the Lesson Educate students about the structure
of chemical bonds and how heat can
destroy them
Standards: (as applicable) Standard - 3.2.10.A4

International Standards Describe chemical reactions in terms

National Standards of atomic rearrangement and/or
Professional Organization Standards electron transfer.
PA Academic Standards
PA Core Standards

Essential Questions How can the application of heat

destroy chemical bonds?
Objectives Students will be able to:
 Recall how chemical bonds
change after a lecture and
presentation
 Demonstrate the change of
chemical bonds through the
application of heat.
Vocabulary: • Covalent Bond- formed by
sharing electrons
• Ionic Bond- transfer of electrons
from one element to another

Estimated Time 15 min

Materials Required Matches, small sticks, hand sanitizer,
powerpoint, lighter, gallon of water
Procedure BEFORE:
Each professor may choose to align Begin by activating prior knowledge. I
this section to his/her content areas. will describe chemical bonds and
chemical structure of some objects.
This section will include anticipated
areas of differentiated instruction. DURING:
Then I will discuss the ability to change
chemical bonds, mentioning that they
aren’t really destroyed but are
transformed and/or combined with
other chemicals. For instance, wood
burning in oxygen separates some
carbon in the form of ash, and other
carbon into carbon dioxide and some
into water vapor. At the end, we will
go outside and break down the
chemical bond of ethanol by burning
hand sanitizer and possibly some small
sticks.

AFTER:
I will ask questions as to what they
learned and quiz them as to what
happened when we burned the items.

Formative Assessment I will ask questions throughout the

lesson and also check their learning at
the end by having them explain what
happened when we burned items.
Student Resources I will not have any handouts for this
lesson
Accommodations I will adhere to all 504 and IEP
accommodations.
Assessment Assessment will be formative and take
place during the lecture
