ENGINEERING

PORTFOLIO

LOUIS-PIERRE GUIDETTI
A little bit about me: I am a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student
at McGill University. Mechanical Engineering is a broad field, but I have
developed a particular interest and intuition for thermo-fluid dynamics.
My strong creative side has allowed me to excel in problem solving as
well as in design engineering. My life has mostly been driven by two
forces: a relentless curiosity and a monumental desire to innovate and
work on projects that have never been done before.

In this portfolio I will showcase my interests, skills and values. I will walk
you through two academic design projects, a couple examples of the
work I did during my internships and finally a few examples of side
projects that keep my mind busy.
1. Trailing Edge Morphing Wing Project

Most of my semester has been devoted to my research and design project

in which I, along with three others, am designing and prototyping a
morphing airfoil. Above all, this is an aerodynamics-focused design project
– we are building an airfoil that can modify its camber and the lift it
produces, all the while maintaining a smooth and continuous surface, thus
reducing the overall drag. This research is at the forefront of what is being
done in the field today.
2. Electric Propulsion System for a Long
Endurance Solar Aircraft Project

My group and I were tasked with designing a gearbox to complete the

electric propulsion system of Solar Impulse’s solar powered aircraft. We
fully dimensioned all gears, shafts, bearings, and calculated all the
stresses, fatigues and safety factors. I developed a strong sense for the
iterative style of design that engineering problems require.

3. Structural Engineering Design

At this structural engineering firm, I was tasked with designing detailed

drawings and structural plans. These drawings were extremely intricate as
they specified very precise instructions, materials, parts and assemblies.
Once completed, I reviewed my plans with contractors, architects and
clients as well as petitioned them to the notorious SF Department of
Building Inspection.
4. Marin Made Internship

Through my internship at Marin Made, I gained a strong understanding of

a variety of manufacturing methods. Constantly switching from one to
another helped me garner valuable hands on experience in welding,
grinding, sawing, sanding and CAMing. Furthermore, I invented, designed
and CADed entire mechanical machines – most notably a solar-powered
Stirling engine vessel.
5. Miscellaneous Personal Projects

When I’m neither working on a school project nor participating in an

internship, I like to fill up my time with various projects. Most of the time
I’m simply looking to solve or explore a question that is bugging me. The
next pages are a compilation of some of my most recent personal
endeavors.
These projects were done on MATLAB, the two top ones are part of a
project in which I was tinkering around with Chaos theory and
Feigenbaum’s number. The one on the bottom left was part of an
economic / market simulation.
