Willian's line method is used to find the friction power of the engine. In
willin's line method, we plot the graph of specific fuel consumption to
the torque(brake). we then extrapolate the graph(which is partially a
straight line) to zero specific fuel consumption and note down the
torque which gives us the approximate value of friction power. The
figure given below gives you some clarity.

Before answering this question, we need to know some concept of

governing. In petrol engine, we keep the air-fuel mixture constant and
vary the amount of the mixture intake for required torque or power.
This is called quantitative governing. In diesel engine, we draw a
constant volume of air (compressed) and vary the fuel injected.
technically, we alter the quality of the air - fuel mixture. this is called
qualitative governing.

Coming to the answer for this question, we cannot apply willian's

method in SI engine because, at low speeds, the air mixture intake is

very low(quantitative governing). Hence, there will be a low pressure

If we use the same test for CI engines, there is qualitative governing and
hence, there will be fixed amount of air entering the cylinder and no
negative pressure and pumping losses occurs. So, we get a relatively
closer value of friction power. the errors are greatly minimized.

So, Willian's line method is applicable only to Diesel(C.I) engines.

I tried finding this on internet and just got one thing that it's because
rate of consumption of air is variable in S.I. engine. Why? I don't know
yet, but will get back to you in a couple of days with all knowledge and if
you come to know anything, let me know that as it sounds an
interesting topic to me to explore.

From what I could recollect from the other answer, its probably because
this method is based on an assumption somewhat as listed below.
This air consumption is variable in SI engine because air fuel mixture is
sent into the engine in a  particluar ratio  and since  fuel required at all
rpm is not same in SI enigne this air consumption changes too.

P.S. ignore the spelling errors for I have typed it freom my mobile.
