Teaching Writing

This Webcast features three main writing experts Dr. Steven Graham, Dr. Louisa Moats,

and Dr. Susan Neuman and the main topic under discussion is teaching writing. The experts

explores various topics that are related to writing. They first address why writing is important,

what parents and educators can do to help students struggling to write and the latest research

development that focuses on teaching writing. The experts argue that both parents and teachers

should try as much as possible to create an environment that fosters writing especially amongst

children. This is because writing is a very critical tool that aids in shaping the future of children

and having a solid foundation from the start helps children in developing confidence as they

move on. Children need tools such as alphabets, writing papers, dictionaries and message boards

to motivate them to write better.

Latest scientific knowledge in the field of writing proves that elements such

as spelling knowledge go hand in hand with writing. It is thus necessary to ensure that children

have a bit of spelling knowledge by the time they leave kindergarten. This will help them to

decode simple instructions and be able to put it in writing. Knowing the meaning of the word

helps children to internalize it thus making it easier for them to write it down. The researchers

have also put together a list of the most common words in writing and teachers play a crucial role

in helping children to memorize the words and this skills helps them to lay a concrete foundation

in writing. When a child gets to understand this words by the fourth grade, chances are that they

will stick throughout his/her whole period of learning. In conclusion, I will ask Dr.Graham to

expound on strategies that can be incorporated in teaching students with Dysgraphia and how to

make them feel comfortable during the process.
