JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGEON IN

AURANGABAD

What Is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Dr. Yashwant Gade runs his own setup Gade Hospital, He is a Joint
Replacement Surgeon In Aurangabad. Joint replacement surgery is
removing damaged joint and putting in a new one. A joint is where two or
more bones come together, like the knee, hip, and shoulder. The surgery is
usually done by a doctor.
Several conditions can cause joint pain and disability & lead patients to
consider joint replacement surgery. In many cases, joint pain is caused by
damage to the cartilage that lines the ends of the bones either from
arthritis, a fracture, or another condition. In a normal joint, the joint surface
is covered by a smooth articular surface that allows for smooth movement
within the joint, whereas in arthritic joint the cartilage is gradually worn
out causing the articular ends of the bones to rub against one another
leading to pain and restricted range of motion.
TYPES OF JOINT REPLACEMENT
1. TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT

The knee is the larger joint in the body, and

having healthy knees is crucial for performing
everyday activities like walking. It’s comprised
of the low end of the femur, the top end of the
tibia, and the patella, which is also known as
the kneecap. The knee can become severely
damaged by an injury or arthritis, making it
impossible to complete regular activities. In a
total knee replacement, the surgeon will cut out
the damaged cartilage area at the ends of the
femur and tibia, and then change them with
metal components to provide new surfaces
inside the joint. A spacer is also inserted
between the metal components to allow the joint
to glide smoothly.
2. TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

In a total hip replacement (also called total hip

arthroplasty), the damaged bone and cartilage is
removed and replaced with prosthetic components.
The damaged femoral head is removed and
replaced with a metal stem that is placed into the
hollow center of the femur. The femoral stem may
be either cemented or “press fit” into the bone.
A metal or ceramic ball is placed on the upper
part of the stem. This ball replaces the damaged
femoral head that was removed.
The damaged cartilage surface of the socket (
acetabulum) is removed and replaced with a metal
socket. Screws or cement are sometimes used to
hold the socket in place.
A plastic, ceramic, or metal spacer is inserted
between the new ball and the socket to allow for a
smooth gliding surface.
3. SHOULDER JOINT REPLACEMENT

The shoulder consists of three different bones: the

upper arm bone or the humerus, the shoulder blade or
the scapula, and the collarbone or clavicle. The
shoulder is one more example of a ball-and-socket
joint, and the cartilage area of the ball and socket are
supposed to glide smoothly against each other when
you move your shoulder.
In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of
the shoulder are removed and replaced with artificial
components, called a prosthesis.
The treatment options are either replacement of just the
head of the humerus bone (ball), or replacement of
both the ball and the socket (glenoid).
WHAT HAPPENS DURING SURGERY ?

First, the surgical team will give you medicine so you won’t feel pain
(anesthesia). The medicine may block the pain only in one part of the body
(regional), or it may put your whole body to sleep (general). The team will
then replace the damaged joint with a prosthesis.
Each surgery is different. How long it takes depends on how badly the joint
is damaged and how the surgery is done. To replace a knee or a hip takes
about 2 hours or less unless there are complicating factors. After surgery,
you will be moved to a recovery room for 1 to 2 hours until you are fully
awake or the numbness goes away.
