Section 15 Vocabulary – Excel

1. Active Cell- the cell in use in a spreadsheet

2. Alignment- a software feature you use to change the horizontal position of text such as left, centered,
or right

3. Average function- a built-in formula in a spreadsheet that adds the values in a cell range and divides
the sum by the number of values in the range

4. Cell- the box formed at the point where a column and row meet in a spreadsheet or table

5. Cell Name or Address- the location (column letter and row number) of the active cell in a spreadsheet

6. Cell Pointer-the spreadsheet mouse pointer

7. Cell Range-a continuous group of selected cells in a spreadsheet

8. Column-information arranged vertically on a page; in a spreadsheet, columns are identified by letters


such as A, B, C

9. Entry Bar-area on a spreadsheet where the text, number, or formula in the active cell is displayed;
also called the Formula bar in some programs

10. Fill Down-a spreadsheet feature you use to copy cell contents to a range of cells below the active cell

11. Fill Right-a spreadsheet feature you use to copy cell contents to a range of cells to the right of the
active cell

12. Format-the appearance of information such as bold or italics; in a spreadsheet displaying commas,
dollar signs, percent signs, or decimal places

13. Formulas-a combination of values or cell references and mathematical operators (addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division)

14. Functions-built-in formulas in a spreadsheet

15. Label-words entered in a spreadsheet cell; cell contents are treated as text by the spreadsheet

16. Landscape-the printing of information across the long edge of a paper so that the page layout is wide

17. Mathematical Operators-a mathematical function or symbol such as addition (+), subtraction (-),
multiplication (*), and division (/)

18. MAX Function- a built-in formula in a spreadsheet that determines the largest or maximum number
in a cell range

19. MIN Function-a built-in formula in a spreadsheet that determines the smallest or minimum number
in a cell range

20. Page Orientation-the direction (portrait or landscape) in which information is printed across the
paper

21. Portrait orientation: the printing of information across the short edge of a paper so that the page
layout is tall

22. Row-information arranged horizontally on a page; in a spreadsheet, rows are identified by numbers
such as 1, 2, or 3

23. Spreadsheet- a software program you use to process financial or mathematical information

24. SUM Function-a built-in formula in a spreadsheet that adds the values in a cell range

25. Value-numbers entered in a spreadsheet cell; cell contents are treated as number, time, or date by
the spreadsheet
