CHAPTER 1
BACKGROUND OF PROJECT

4
1.0 BACKGROUND OF PROJECT

Today, the Iban are still a powerful presence, albeit for a different, more
innocuous reason – they are the largest ethnic group, indigenous or not, in Sarawak.
They are considered as a branch of the Dayak lineage, even earning the nickname
‘Sea Dayaks’ from British colonists in the past. As is the case for their native brethren
from other tribes, the Iban have an illustrious spread of culture and tradition that dates
back centuries, making them an indispensable piece of Sarawak’s heritage.

The Iban Heritage Center under the management of Malaysia Tourism

Promotion Board and with support from the Sarawak community, traces the history of
the Iban and South Asian communities in the Southeast Asian region.

The four-storey building is an iconic, unique and sustainable building that blends
both indigenous Iban as well as modern architectural elements. The architectural
design for the facade this building is inspired by the Pua Kumbu, the hand-woven warp
ikat textile of the Iban and seeks to create an urban forum for the celebration and
appreciation of Iban culture. It houses five permanent galleries, small scale museum
facilities, a museum shop as well as programming and activity spaces.

Situated at Gat lebuh Gereja, the centre also serves as a springboard for visitors
to explore the roots of indigenous and enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of the
historical precinct The main objective is promote greater public awareness and
appreciation of Iban heritage, arts and culture.

Thus, Penang island is known for its outstanding aesthetic beauty — it’s an area
that bears testament to the compelling natural history of our planet. Listed as a
UNESCO site, the island will soon be host to a new Iban Heritage Center. The center
is anticipated to become a meeting place set to educate and promote the importance
of preserving the Iban’s culture and its heritage for future generations to come among
East Malaysian.

5
1.1 BUILDING CHOSEN

Taking into consideration the fact that the goal of the proposed building was to
make a good balance between historical heritage and existing contemporary context,
conclusion was that the best way to achieve this was by proposing moderate
intervention carefully implemented into existing surroundings. The intervention aims
to promote qualities of existing public square size and location while trying to add new
qualities by incorporating UNESCO sites into public space and making them
accessible by elements like open rooftop, ramps, landscaping and lighting. Design
proposal tries to reinforce the monuments historical significance.

Square paving consists of cast-in-situ wide concrete patches of several lengths

which are derived from grid in two very bright almost white tones and with slight
difference in surface roughness and crease orientation. Instead of ramps, all small
height alterations are compensated with sloping pavement. Only new structures in the
proposal, beside sky rooftop and big ramp in site, are 2 platforms above parking
area. Lower level is elevated deck connected with main square with stands, ramp,
stairs and elevators, combining greenery and paving.

Having in mind all the challenges of managing culture in this era, and a specific
need to re-establish knowledge, critical thinking and sophistication as values in the
era of commercial spectacle. Particularly, decided to set the design guidelines based

6
on two pieces of information from design brief. One of them is the overview of Iban’s
architectural heritage; the other one is importance of architecture in museum
programs and activities.

To create an engaging facade, the science and technology aspects were taken
from the point of design within the building, and was inspired by the Iban traditional
woven cloth, Pua Kumbu. The pua kumbu, the hand-woven warp ikat textile of the
Iban, represents the quintessence of Iban culture. It is, depending on the design,
historical archive, a mythological or religious story or a personal tale. It is a statement
about the soul of the weaver and her relationship with the spirit. The Pua is treated as
a gift from the Petara (Gods) to the Iban community and for that, it is considered
something very special and sacred thus regarded as a symbol of a cultural identity for
the Iban community in Sarawak. The building’s facade is a reflection of this inspiration
and was created using a concrete mix reinforced with micro-fibers. Pre fabricated
panels were used to create the design, and they included pigmentation to change the
color.

7
1.2 LOCATION OF THE BUILDING

Church Street, or Lebuh Gereja, is one of the streets within the core zone of the
George Town Unesco World Heritage Site. Located within the Commercial District of
19th century George Town, it is one of the early streets to be laid in the town, and has
appeared in the Popham Map of 1798.

The Iban Heritage Center is building developments, which strategically located at

Gat Lebuh Gereja, particularly near at Georgetown adjacent to the Pengkalan Weld.

4 storeys heritage building in Lebuh Gereja provide and environment to work,

relax, shop, play that would suit the needs of any business. The ground floor is fronted
by a landscaped road & walkway, perfect for retail business.

10
1.4 PROBLEM STATEMENT

 Everyone in East Malaysia including some surrounding people around the main
cultural or world heritages is not even aware of the real stories of the Indigenous
Iban heritages. It is difficult for travelers when they cannot get the desired
information from people around and the websites.

 The shape of the building is rigid and the pattern of the building make it difficult for
the space planning

 Malaysia has been rich of diversity in culture, and one of the sustain ethnic
which need to be promoted among East Malaysia. However, due to the lack of
dissemination of heritage information, tourists and sometimes even nearby
city-dwellers are not well informed about it.

 The current cultural heritage has lack of an aesthetic, emotional experience for
the viewer, leading to personal growth and development. Moreover, these
buildings, artworks, and artifacts can serve as a creative inspiration for
contemporary artists, both those working within traditional forms and those
working in a modern style.

11
1.5 OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT

 To conceive an Iban’s cultural center for people including exhibition galleries,

cultural activities, restaurants and information center as well as their landscape
architecture.

 To create a unique configuration that can compose different public spaces which
offer a suitable urban sequence. This detailed work on public space (gardens and
passages) helps the definition of the empty space between the different
constructions which stands out as the main conception of the project. The
elaboration of a sustainable development of Iban’s culture, with cultural heritage
as important factor.

 To frame such programs as would encourage and involve youth of the cultural
center among themselves and with the youth of the rest of the country in creative
cultural communications through the process of seminars, exchanges and
workshops on matters relating to the cultural heritage of Iban.

 To preserve, protect and promote the unique history and rich culture of those that
once inhabited and settled in Iban’s culture.

 The Iban Heritage Center is first and foremost a culture center – A center
dedicated to honoring those early settlers and inhabitants of the Ibans.

 To create awareness among the people of Penang, especially, to appreciate

others heritage. It includes tangible assets like intangible heritage like art, culture,
performing arts and old business practices which are dying.

12
1.6 CONCEPT DESIGN

Main Concept : The Exquisite Oneness

It was inspired from Puan Kumbu, sacred clothing which made by Iban’s women
and been wearing by Iban’s man warrior before they go to the war. It simply shows
that harmony between each other complete between them. These two opposite
character are complementary each as both mutual depending to each other. And
because of that harmony is reached through balance and brings perfectionist purity
women and men.
Deeply connected & appreciative of the art of hand-weaving, these ladies are
quietly spearheading a demand for the finest, almost extinct handcrafted textiles of
our country. The relationship bet ween the forest and the pua kumbu was one spoke
in the greater wheel of interconnections between the pua, headhunting, land
acquisition, fertility practices, rice farming, spirituality and the vast canon of Iban oral
history. Historically, when the pua kumbu circulated through the forest, it joined the
cloth to the trees and the earth. It pulled together diverse themes, connotations and
remembered notions that were articulated around the cloth. Both forests and the pua
kumbu existed in a reciprocal and interconnected dynamic; the pua kumbu incited the
movement of the Ibans through the forest.

13
Sub-Concept : Emergence of the Unity

The emergence of unity as the sub concept of the project to strengthen the
project’s overall design. It is derived from two principal religions Buddhism and
Hinduis coexist in Nepal. In fact the two religions have merged into one another,
emphasizing the basic character of older and parental faith. The arose out of the
innate spirit of tolerance of one another’s point of vie that permeates the life of the
Nepalese folks. The Buddhist and Hindus cross each other in religion and society with
no strife but in perfect accord, and with a sense of reverence for the respective deities
of each, often worshipped deities in common as amply indicated above.

The spirit of oneness and unity prevalent among them has been strengthened by
the common participation in the various national festivals, welding the diverse sects
and peoples into a united people. Buddhism regards life as the unity of the physical
and the spiritual, the Buddhist of Nepal are not distinguishable from their Hindu
brethen, as they have adopted vital aspects of the traditional and parental faith with
fillial affection and plety. The physical and spiritual aspect of lives are completely
inseparable and of equal importance. Hence, there are two stripes which bent into
helical helical shape as sub concept model. It represent two major religions in Nepal;
Buddhist and Hindu. They live together in the country as a lamp of light arising from a
wicked soaked oil and illuminate their motherland with the common light of their souls.
As the stripes has the same size and shape, it represent the similarities of the both as
both believe in reincarnation, karma and enlightenment. Also while most people these
days consider these concepts to be Budhhist, all of these concepts come from
Hinduism. The two stripes are twisted form to symbolize the gradual improvement of
evolution of each religions while different width along the stripes is to create some
vibrant volumes to sub conceptual model.

CHAPTER 2
CASE STUDIES

15
2.1 CASE STUDY 1 : 6 Degrees Cafe

Location: Alam Sutera, Indonesia

Gross floor area: 208 sqm
Client/owner: PT Dinamik Sukses Artaboga
Architecture consultant: OOZN Design - Singapore
Principal designer: Rafal Kapusta
Interior design consultant: OOZN Design - Singapore
Interior contractor: Myspace design
Lighting consultant: OOZN Design - Singapore
Main contractor: Myspace design

Situated inside a mall in Jakarta, 6 Degrees Cafe has a rectangular floor plan with a 16m
long shopfront on the long side. The most visually impact from the exterior was the ceiling and
the rear wall, so we focused on it. We created an undulating skin of timber slats equally spaced
apart at 150mm intervals which covers the entire wall and ceiling to break the monotony of
spatial heights. Undulation of the veneer plywood were hand crafted by the local carpenters,
meticulously following the unwrapped elevations drawn by us. Varying depth of the fins not only
create a strong visual impact, they also hide the ceiling equipment and improve the acoustics
inside the cafe. With music in the background and heavy flow of customers, individuals are still
able to enjoy a chitchat over a nice cup of coffee.
Finishes were carefully chosen to create a cosy and relaxed ambiance using natural
materials & colors, including the selection of the furniture. Timber veneer slats matches the
concrete screed floor to give a rustic touch. Warm timber and natural tones contrast with a dark
interior paint provides an escape from the outside heat. Individual pendant lights hang over
each table, floor recessed strip lights gives a soft illumination to the timber slats, providing just
the right amount of luxe level to create a soothing ambiance.
16
2.2 CASE STUDY 2 : The Indian Heritage Centre

The Indian Heritage Centre (IHC), under the management of the National Heritage Board
and with support from the Indian community, traces the history of the Indian and South Asian
communities in the Southeast Asian region.
The four-storey IHC building is an iconic, unique and sustainable building that blends both
traditional Indian as well as modern architectural elements. The architectural design for the
facade of IHC is inspired by the “baoli” (or Indian stepwell), and seeks to create an urban forum
for the celebration and appreciation of Indian culture. It houses five permanent galleries, small
scale museum facilities, a museum shop as well as programming and activity spaces.
Situated at 5 Campbell Lane, the center also serves as a springboard for visitors to explore
Little India and enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of the historical precinct. IHC was opened
by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on 7th May 2015 and will offer year-round exhibitions,
programmes and activities to promote greater public awareness and appreciation of Indian
heritage, arts and culture.
Embodying IHC’s vision, the four-storey IHC building is an iconic, unique and sustainable
building that blends both traditional Indian as well as modern architectural elements. The
architectural design for the facade of IHC is inspired by the “Baoli” (or Indian step well), and
seeks to create an urban forum for the celebration and appreciation of Indian culture.
The diversity and mufti-faceted nature of Indian culture is also captured in the use of a
translucent shimmering facade to create an impression of IHC as a “shining jewel” in the day,
and the transformation of the IHC into a “glowing lantern” of the Indian community with the
lighting of the colorful facade mural at night.

2.2 CASE STUDY 3 : One Main Office Renovation

Architects:dECOi Architects
Location:Cambridge, MA, USA
Area:10000.0 ft2
Project Year:2009
Project Team:Mark Goulthorpe, Raphael Crespin, Gabriel Blue Cira, Matt Trimble, Priyanka
Shah
MIT:Kaustuv de Biswas
Mathematics:Prof Alex Scott (Oxford University)
Consultants:Helen Heitman, Pablo Garcia (Gensler Associates)
General Contractor:Paul Jacobson (Tricore)
Millwork Contractor:Shawn Keller (CWKeller)

From the architect. The project was for the penthouse offices of an investment group in
green building and clean energy technologies (CChange). The design drew from our prior
sculpture, In the Shadow of Ledoux, 1993, and the Galerie Miran, 2003, proposing the milling
of all elements of the interior from sustainably-forested spruce plywood using numeric
command machines: information carves renewable carbon-absorbing resource.

The developed design was nuanced parametric-ally in celebration of the indifference of the
CNC machine to formal complexity. The entire project was nested onto 1200 4ft x 12ft plywood
sheets, and milled using a small 3-axis CNC router, which effortlessly carved the ply sections
according to our prescribed ‘weeping’ tool paths. Well over a million linear feet of cut were
issued, yet the machine process was essentially error-free and highly accurate. Assembly
proved relatively straightforward given the accuracy of the milling, and we enjoyed the
elegance of the emerging forms.

One Main uses sustainability forested Finnish spruce ply with non-toxic water-based glue.
The 10,000sq ft (1000m2) project nested onto 1200 sheets of 1.5” thick 4ft x 12ft ply, milled
locally by a single 3-axis milling machine. dECOi provided the actual tooling paths (over 1
million linear feet of cut), with no plans or sections, just 3D instructional files. Wastage was
about 10%, pulped and recycled.

CHAPTER 5
ANALYSIS

5.1 STYLE
The style that been chosen is contemporary Iban style. Iban Heritage Center is a
parametrically modeled and detailed forefront of design. To refine the concept,
self-developed parametric tools and cloud rendering technology to reduce cost,
decrease fabrication time, and apply an aesthetic that perfectly aligns to the agendas
of the Iban itself will be used. While the center has a contemporary traditional look, it is
envisioned as a fluid space characteristics – a traditional element of Puan
Kumbu,Iban’s traditional sacred woven fabric

A fluid sculptural wooden was made to this magnificent 1 000 square meter Iban
Heritage Center at the heart of Georgetown financial district. For best results, the
project was created in a parametric environment, allowing multiple iterations in the
shortest time possible to reach a fluid surface and the structural components were
updated automatically without having to redraw over and over again. The structure
made of 1,500 pieces seamlessly joined together into 172 arctic birch sections, each
one slightly different from the rest. Inside the shell of this building, intricate,
nature-inspired geometry to support the structure, which lends architectural substance
and eye-catching design, while allowing efficient use of the busy space by the user.

Iban contemporary style is one of the style that emphasize the beauty of simplicity
and naturally. Most of the material that been proposed is comes from the natural
resources, it is because to create the natural ambiance to the user. Installed on every
corners and edges in undulating angular planes, the wood strips clad the walls, ceiling,
creating a fluid volume that redefines the way interior spaces are perceived.

5.2 DESIGN SOLUTION
PROPOSED FLOOR PLAN

Major Area 1 - Black Box Theater

This 220 square meter, multipurpose room is great for rehearsing, classes, meetings,
private functions or even as a Black Box Theater. Providing a space that is easily built
and maintained, and is usually home to performances with very basic technical
arrangements, such as limited sets, simple lighting effects, and an intimate focus on
the story, writing, and performances rather than technical elements. The seating is
typically composed of loose chairs on platforms, which can be easily moved or
removed to allow the entire space to be adapted to the artistic elements of a
production.

Major Area 2- Sigat Gallery

This gallery and exhibition area is provided for user to let them has a chance to
discovery and explore the history of Iban’s culture. The galleries present, through
artifact and interactive displays, the history of interactions between deep jungle and
Iban’s culture, depict the experiences of the Iban community in Malaya during the
colonial period, and highlight the contributions of the Iban communities to Malaysia’s
nation-building efforts.

Minor Area 1- Receptionist Area

As the saying goes, people only have one chance to make a good first impression.
In its most basic form, a reception area is a section of The Iban Heritage Center that is
used to greet all visitors and to provide a waiting area for them until they are met by the
person that they came to the business to meet with.

The layout of your reception area is something you will need to plan carefully.
Furniture placement, decor and space consider taken into all need to be a part of the
design so that visitors get a positive first impression the second they step through the
door.

CHAPTER 6
CONCLUSION

76
6.1 CONCLUSION

What has become particularly clear is that the process of listening is central to the
transmission of cultural value and identity, even though the goal of being an attentive
listener in the quest to understand is something that we tend to take for granted.
However, in an Iban environment, listening is to do with being actively involved and
trying to interpret the deep meanings of their conversations. Thus, to a certain
extent, pua kumbu inspired-design embodies this deep meaning as much, if not more
so than traditional means of story-telling.

During the process of trying to understand the problems and issues around what
kind of meanings are involved with this center, an examination of how a group of
people respond to such an article was activated. An analysis of their narratives
revealed the close bonds they have with their landscape and a fleeting perception of
their sense of self which, in turn led to a realization of how culture itself can be a
material from which one might inspired one’s identity.

One of the most important roles of community centers is developing social

intellectual of individuals. The Iban Heritage Centers are not formal centers of
communities, but at an informal level they may fulfill their functions. The activities of the
culture center are necessary for the community. Generally, such forms of cultural
activities prevail which are related to music, theater, singing and dancing. The culture
centers should continuously analyze the needs of the inhabitants and look for new
possibilities to provide more varied cultural services.

The presence of arts and culture in a specific neighborhood or community location

can increase attention and foot traffic, bringing in visitors and attracting more
development. Furthermore, formal and informal training in the arts can abet the
development of skills valued in the global economy — such as strong oral and written
communication skills, precise and high-quality work performance, ease in working in
teams and ensembles, comfort in new and innovative situations, and the ability to work
well with people from diverse cultures.

A sign of a healthy community is its simultaneous ability to preserve and invent its
culture — that is, to conserve its history and heritage and at the same time develop
new expressions for current times. Arts and cultural activity and the leadership of
artists, historians, folklorists, anthropologists, planners, and other community leaders
play important roles in preserving the history and heritage of a place, as well as easing
tensions and encouraging respect for the changing cultural landscape. Despite the
importance of Iban’s history and heritage, preservation is rarely seen as a potential
basis for innovation and advancement. As a result, too often sufficient resources are
not dedicated to preserving significant meaningful spaces and objects, documenting
stories from elders, and recording a community's contemporary cultural practices.
