ABSTRACT

Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate whether there is any significant
effect of using the Word Processor to increase students’ writing skill focusing on editing
and revising aspects at eighth grade students of SMP Islam PB. Soedirman Bekasi in
2017/2018 academic year. This study is quantitative that implementing a pre-
experimental research that has been done in 4 meetings.
This research method used 1 class from 6 classes in SMP Islam PB. Soedirman. At
the first meeting, the writer held pre-test. The instrument which is used to hold pre-test
and post-test are writing and editing a recount text tests. After giving pre-test, the writer
gave the treatment to the class in about two meetings. Then, at the fourth meeting the
writer held post-test. After getting pre-test and post-test score of writing and editing
tests, the writer did normality test for each of tests. After that, the writer did the t-test and
the last hypothesis testing.
The data which has got are the writing pre-test score: n = 25, X = 12.78, s = 1.99
and the writing post-test score; n = 25, X = 15.22, s = 1.72. The editing pre-test score: n =
25, X = 66.44, s = 6.04 and the editing post-test score; n = 25, X = 78.08, s = 9.48. After
getting those data, the writer did ttest. The computation of writing test showed t observed of
writing test = 7.09 and ttable = 1.71. It means that tobserved ≥ ttable. And the computation of
editing test showed tobserved of editing test = 6.13 and ttable = 1.71. It means that tobserved ≥
ttable. The research comes to a conclusion that there is a significant effect of using Word
Processor to increase students’ writing skill focusing on editing and revising aspects at
eighth grade students of SMP Islam PB. Soedirman Bekasi.

INTRODUCTION
The implementation of writing activities in school could be conducted in many ways
using appropriate aids and media. In this modern era, teachers can teach writing using
PowerPoint slides. The entire lessons of the students can be incorporated in PowerPoint slides
and then can be taught to them in the classrooms by interpolating sounds and animations in the
text lessons making the lessons very interesting to the students. For students, they can master
writing skill by practicing to write something in several of the modern technology media.
Currently, there are some kinds of online media including the social media of which the
most famed Line and Instagram. Such media can be used by students for increasing their writing
skill. Students can share their ideas, chat with other friends and give comment by using English
there. Besides those social media, there is Blogger which is the most famous online media for
writing. They can write their ideas, short stories or even personal diaries. Furthermore, there is
the Word Processor as the software which can be used as the media for writing. A Word
Processor can help students for editing and revising their writing product. Word Processor has
some useful tools such as, grammar and spelling checker, language tool, and thesaurus.
The use of media for writing seemed as one of the good ways for increasing students’
writing skill. They will accustom for writing in English and share their written product to others
by using the online and social media. Moreover, the use of Word Processor helps them especially
in editing and revising the text. Thus, by utilizing those media properly, the writing skill will also
increase.
Based on the writer observation, it was found that most of the students in SMP Islam PB.
Soedirman are weak in writing. It can be seen from the writer’s observation on students’ written
works which shown by their teacher. The result indicated that students made many mistakes on
their texts such as, the spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure. There are
some causes of the student weakness in writing. First, the cause is the ineffective of the use of
media while teaching and learning process. Although, in that school has used the technology
while learning process and each of the students has had a notebook, the teacher just asked the
students to write in a paper and composition based on the topic that has been prepared in the
textbook. Second, the teacher does not give such any comments on students’ worksheet. The
teacher does not tell them about any errors as students’ weakness. The last, when the writer
asked further to the students, they also said that sometimes teacher does not give their work
back with any correction. As the impact, the students do not really know about the correction of
their own writing, whereas students need to know their weakness, so they could not improve
their writing skill.
In this globalization era, the computer plays an important role in education and language
learning, as Dhaif (1989:1) stated that the computer has become an important addition to the
3

classroom and has begun to be loved and admired by learners. The history of Computer-assisted
Language Learning (CALL) suggests that the computer serves a variety of uses for language
teaching and learning. Newby (2011:51) stated that as an assistant, the computer serves as a
productivity tool aiding the teacher or learner in performing various work tasks. It can be seen
that computer can be a tutor for language drills or skills practice, a stimulus for discussion and
interaction, and a tool for writing and research. The presence of Word Processor as the part of
CALL will help the student to decrease their weakness in writing. Many students can rely on the
Word Processor editing tools to assist them in writing and solving spelling and grammatical
errors while writing. As Newby (2011:52) claimed that nearly all Word Processor have spelling
checkers; some correct spelling “on the fly” as the learner enter text, and some do basic
grammatical and syntactical checking. It means that the students who use Word Processor
introduced fewer new errors when editing and revising their text as compared to students who
re-wrote their work on paper.
To solve the students’ writing problem in SMP Islam PB. Soedirman Bekasi, the writer
thinks that the use of the Word Processor can help them to improve their writing skill.
Considering the benefits of the Word Processor the writer is curious in conducting the research
entitled: “The effectiveness of Using Word Processor to Increase Students’ Writing Skill Focusing
on Editing and Revising Aspects at The Eighth Grade Students of SMP Islam PB. Soedirman
Bekasi” It is hoped that the students’ difficulties and mistakes in writing can be overcome.
The Limitation of the problem is : the writer limits the problem on writing recount text
by using Word Processor at the eighth grade students of SMP Islam PB. Soedirman Bekasi.
The problem statement of this research is: Is the use of Word Processor effective in
increasing student’s writing skill focusing on editing and revising process at the eighth grade
students of SMP Islam PB. Soedirman Bekasi?
The objective of the research is to investigate whether there is any significant effect of
using the Word Processor to increase students’ writing skill focusing on editing and revising
aspects at the eighth grade students of SMP Islam PB. Soedirman Bekasi.

METHODOLOGY OF THE RESEARCH

The research was hold at the SMP Islam PB. Soedirman Bekasi, which is located on Jl.
Nusantara Raya Villa Indah Permai, North Bekasi. The research was held within 4 meetings from
the 22nd of January, 2018 to the 2nd of February, 2018. This included giving pre-test, presenting
lessons, and giving post-test. The target population of this research is all the eighth grade
students in SMP Islam PB. Soedirman Bekasi. There are 165 students distributed into six classes.
From six classes of the eighth grade there, the writer got the sample by using random cluster
4

sampling. As a result of this sampling technique, the writer got class 8 Excellent 2 which has 25
students as an experiment class where Word Processor is applied.
This study is quantitative that implementing a pre-experimental research. The writer
taught the 8 Excellent 2 class by using Word Processor as teaching media. The research has been
done in 4 meetings. Each meeting has been conducted with a lesson plan specifially designed by
the writer based on existing curriculum and the proposed classes. The instruments of this
research were set of writing and editing tests. The test is pre-test and post-test. To analyze the
collected data, the writer employed the test formula.

To do this research, the writer arranges the procedure of the research as follows:
1. Searching the information in the library about the theories of the research, variables and the
test.
2. Making a permission letter to take the research from campus.
3. Asking permission to the headmaster and English teacher of SMP Islam PB. Soedirman
