Science Implementation Reflection IMB

I really enjoyed planning my science lesson plan during my IMB experience. When I had

met with my CT initially, I made sure to ask him what the class had been/was going to be

studying around and during the time of my two week clinical experience so that I could make

sure that the topic of my science lesson would integrate well into what he, as the teacher, had

planned to teach the students at that time. At the conclusion of our discussion, we thought it

would be most helpful for me to introduce the students to the concept of ecosystems and biomes

in order to kick off the student’s new unit on earth science. Facilitating this discussion with my

CT really helped me to begin planning my lesson plan and in feeling confident that the content I

was introducing would be beneficial.

As I began planning, I immediately began creating a Google Slides presentation with

pictures and examples for me to use as talking points and to provide students with visual

examples of the content being covered. The Google Slides presentation really helped me to

deliver the content well and show students what I was talking about with some real world

examples and photographs.

One of the things that I added to the Google Slides presentation was actually a short

wordless video depicting various places and creatures on earth. I used this video when

completing a K-W-L chart with my students. During the video, students were asked to ponder

the questions, “What is an ecosystem?” and “What is a biome?” At the conclusion of the video,

a class discussion was facilitated. I enjoyed the element that the video added to the lesson and to
our class discussion. Based on the video, students had very good, very creative hypotheses as to

what an ecosystem and biome are.

When pondering what kind of activity I should do during my science lesson, I thought

back to the foldables that we created in ELED 3221 and thought that a biome foldable would be

both engaging and beneficial for students to create. I am so glad that I decided to do a foldable

as my activity, because the students really enjoyed creating their own foldable and used it

throughout the day to show others and remind themselves of the various types of biomes found

on earth.

Overall, I felt that the lesson went very well. I was pleased with the level of student

engagement that I saw, and I was very pleased with the foldables that the students created. In

addition, the vast majority of the class demonstrated beyond satisfactory levels of content

understanding on their exit ticket performance. The lesson took up the time allotted without

being too long or too short, and I felt that the activities added to the lesson in a positive way.

One thing that I would change in the future is seating arrangements for the short video played

during instruction. Several students could not see very well and asked to move during the video,

which was disruptive. This occurrence will be prevented in the future by either affected students

or all students sitting on the carpet for the video prior to the video starting and with clear

instructions and expectations set as to how the teacher expected each student to listen and focus

out of their seats.
