GOVERNMENT IN BRAZIL

HOW THIS WORKS

BACKGROUND
In the 16th century the State of Brazil was divided into two states, Estado do Maranhao and Estado de Brazil. The land of
South America was divided into royal captaincies and provinces and was ran by one person monarchy. After that the land
was split into a two party system with an emperor. By 1889 all of the provenience were turned into states and the
constitution of Brazil was put in place which allowed the people to elect a president, state governors, state legislators, a
National Congress, and a local state officials. Then in 1964 the military was in charge of the government for twenty-one
years. Then in 1985 Brazil returned to civilian rules and is now a federal representative democratic republic.

ROLE OF THE PRESIDENT


Brazils president is elected by the general population to serve a four year term. The president is in charge of the executive
branch of government and is in charge of the military. The president can propose laws to the national congress or can
make provisional laws in emegency circumstances. The president also represents Brazil in international affairs.

BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT
LEGISLATIVE BRANCH : The legislative branch of the government is administrered by the National Congress and is
responsible for writing and approving new laws. 81 Federal Senate and the 513 Chamber of Deputies make up the National
Congress

JUDICIAL BRANCH : The judicail branch of the government is designed based on a civil law adversarial system, which
means that cases are tried before an unbiased group. The two highest level courts are: the Superior Justice Tribunal and
the Supreme Federal Court. The courts are divided into different jurisdictions throughout state, and included courts like
labor justice, electoral justice, and military justice. For civvil and crimial cases, federal courts.
