The biggest turtles on earth are the leatherback turtles. They are cold blooded, have a scaly skin
and a hard shell, breathe air and lay eggs. These huge creatures lived one hundred million years ago
during the age of dinosaurs.
Leatherbacks are one of the most endangered creatures on earth. They are often caught by
accident in fishing nets and drown while they are stuck underwater. Not only are their nesting habitats
being destroyed but the eggs that they lay are also collected by people for food.
During the nesting season, the female comes ashore on a sandy beach. Then, she digs a hole and
lays about a hundred eggs. After that, she covers them with sand and returns to the ocean. She does not
guard her nest, so the eggs are on their own and become food for many predators. The eggs take about
two months to hatch. The tiny hatchlings are only five to eight centimetres long.

Siberian tigers can be found in the forests of eastern Russia. They can also be found in North
Korea and some parts of northeastern China. They are the largest cat species in the world. Also known
as Amur tiger, they grow as long as 11 feet and weigh as much as 600 pounds.
These big cats live in the cold. They have large paws and these paws work like snowshoes, preventing
the tigers from sinking into the snow. In winter, their fur grows thicker and longer to keep them warm.
Each tiger's stripe is unique. You would not find the same patterns on another tiger. The stripes keep
them safe from harm. Siberian tigers are superb hunters. Their typical diet would be wild boars, deers
and water buffaloes.
These majestic tigers are listed as endangered species. They are hunted for their beautiful fur and their
body parts are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Logging and developments are factors contributing
to the loss of their habitat. Today, it is estimated that only 350 – 450 of Siberian tigers are found in the
wild.
