Annotated Bibliography

There are so many things that I want to learn about my topic of animal overpopulation,

but it’s better to know thing that close by like the here in this university. I want to know what

types of rules, regulation, or any that has to do with animal overpopulation. I plan to get as much

information as I can from researching the library database. I plan to read as much information

about animal overpopulation to discover animal population here at UTEP

Research Questions

1. What are the consequence if criminal justice does not address animal overpopulation?

2. Is animal overpopulation a concern to the criminal justice?

American Humane (2016, Aug 6). Animal population control. American Humane. Retrieved

population-control/

The author urges us about the problem of having too much cats and dogs overpopulating,

and the animal shelter having too much to handle. The author acknowledged thought of

spraying and sterilizing the dogs and cats. The sterilized is giving to the dog and cat at a

very young age to reduce the number of unwanted pets. The sterilizer stops the pets from

the ability of having offspring. Veterinarians are the ones to say at what age and when the

animals should be spray. Studies were shown that a small percentage of the pets are not

in the owner home 6 months after the investment. Then finally the writer gives out a list

of what the public can do to fight against the pet overpopulation. The author arranged his

case around a sample study on collecting data on pet animals that are being tested with

sterilizer, to see if they reproduce and if it is an effective situation.

Arluke A. (2004). Brute force. West Lafayette, Indiana. Purdue University Press.

According to Arluke the officers are telling their emotional experiences dealing with

animal abused and how their character changes. The author noted that the officers are

getting calls about the cases of animal abuse they have to show up to investigate.

Depending to the case of the situation if they have to take away the pet from the owner

because they are suffering abuse. The officers give out an ticket to the people that are

abusing their pet and if it was real serious situation then they would have to arrest straight

to court. The process is in the prospective of the rookie police officers on what their

emotion are being translated into the report during when they do their job. At the end you

see the report cases in the court trail and how the outcome of each case is ruled. The

author observed up close and interviewing the people in this subject (the rookie officers).

Macintyre, B. (2009). Factoring farming is unleashing new diseases like the swine flu. does. In

D. Miller A. (Ed.), Factoring farming (pp. 110-113). Farmington Hills, MI: Greenhaven

Press

Macintyre emphasized that the problem of farming is to make things different to gain

more money and they abuse chickens during the way. The author acknowledges that the

chickens are suddenly being populated into a small area of farm. The farmers are now

feeding, treating, and maintaining the chickens in a un-humane manner way to a point

where they got the chickens creating a new disease. These disease are created because the

farmers are force stacking chickens in one spot and that causes disease easier to go from

one chicken and when the chicken are butchered for people to eat. The subject gets

agencies to go and test these chickens are how much of the new swine flu that they

created are being passed around. It also talks about the threats that these chickens bring to

the world health on spreading diseases and effecting the people. The research is a types of

mix on getting samples from the chickens and seeing/ taking a perspective on how the

chickens are being treated in their conditions.

Pew Commission. (2008). Industrial food animal production is a growing health threat. In D.

Miller A. (Ed.), Factory farming (pp. 100-103). Farmington Hills, MI: Greenhaven Press.

The author stresses how the industrial food animal production (IFAP) is a growing threat

to those living around the spreading bacteria, fungi, and virus from nearby water. The

writer reminds us how people dump antibiotic resistance into the environment. Antibiotic

is an substance that kill bacteria and can stop bacteria from growing, but it also

suppresses the natural environment minerals and metal. It is bad because farmers give the

animals of production antibiotics into their system to stimulate their growth. This is really

bad because of around millions of production animals have anti biotics and humans

consume these animals. The production animals aren’t the only thing that are

contaminated the waters are also contaminated with antibiotics. The substance that the

humans consume are contaminated with chemical or infectious agents. The risk are huge

because it can have many different symptoms are the depending on chemical and the

person. The research evaluated of the minerals and testing it having the information of

what effects are but have no table or list.

Selby, L., Rhoades, J., Hewett, J., & James A. Irvin. (1979). A survey of attitudes toward

The authors presents how irresponsible owners let their dog go in the street and let the

dogs mate causing overpopulation. The author talked to these owners men and women on

causes of animal overpopulation in their community. Each owner took a survey stating

their opinion on what they feel for the animal overpopulation and asking way to prevent

animal overpopulation. The paper has a table say what the owners and non-owners feel

about animal overpopulation. The where ask about the differences cases that are

reasonable to the causes that lead to overpopulation. The studies show that non-pet

owners are least likely to say that irresponsible owners are the reason why the theirs

animal overpopulation in their community. The authors surveyed to owners and non-

owners, and they were ask a series of questions, and also contain the answers in a table

with the questions that where ask.

Government Review,10(3), 87-91 http://0-

www.jstor.org.lib.utep.edu/stable/4354629?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents

The author states that animal overpopulation has gone out of control bringing problems

with it as well, police is putting ways to face this problem. The author noted that animals

are separated from unwanted animals and uncontrolled animals. Unwanted animals are

obviously owners not wanting their pets, and they have an easier solution to do with

them. The unwanted pets would be sold to a new owner and if it wasn’t the owner should

pay for animal shelter to take care and maintain the pet. The uncontrolled dog are more of

a problem because if stray they need to be kept off the streets because of bacteria that it

might spread and the main problem that stray dog have is that they can reproduce

offspring. The main problem that the community issues are in the shelter because of the

animal control have a limited budget to actually do their job. The control center do have

some power but what would restrict them would be the budget for them to actually do

their job. The author observation of a city animal shelter on how they deal with

overpopulated animals and how handle situation with a limited amount of money.

from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1432043/?page=1

Winkler presents the uncertain (undistinguished) amount deaths of humans caused by dog

bites each year. The author noted about the history of the cases that involves dogs bites.

The author only wrote the cases that the dogs attacked on the humans and have been

identify that have been murdered. Even though the writer only wrote the cases that have

murder because it helps the writer out on the number of people dying. It also helps him to

go more into depth about the effects and it symptoms that the dogs have into their mouths

leading up to cause death. It also it was supposed to be an informative for an dog owner

or a future dog owner to the risk of having a dog, and the diseases and the bacteria that

the dogs could bring to the humans. To Winkler, the data suggest an assumption on how

people died from the dog bites from the cases that actually been recorded.
