“Prof. C.R.S Pillai”

Pillai Institute of Management Studies and Research, Dr. K.M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus,

Sector - 16, New Panvel-410206

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The opportunity to get practical training in a reputed organization fulfills the

felt gap between the theory and practical. In the case of a student of finance &

control, this aspect assumes an additional dimension.

I hereby acknowledge Pillai Institute of Management Studies and Research for

providing the constant guidance and encouragement which helped me a lot to

be successful in my efforts. This formal acknowledgement will hardly be

sufficient to express my deep sense of gratitude to all of them. It was a

memorable experience while doing my project on a Save the Girl Child.

I would also like to thank Dr. Satish Nair director of Pillai Institute of

Management Studies and Research, New Panvel and Prof. C.R.S Pillai my

faculty guide without whom this project report could not be successfully

completed.

ABOUT SAHASEE

Saahasee emerged as a direct response to the ever-growing inflow of the

rural migrant population seeking employment in the city of Delhi. Formed in 1981,
Saahasee, formerly a part of Sharan, has been working for the past two decades
offering hope to the Urban Poor who live in the slums and settlements of our cities.
Saahasee initiated women’s self-help groups in the early 90s, realizing that if
People particularly women in the slums can be organized collectively.

Saahasee works towards the empowerment of the urban poor whose sense of
dignity and justice is not necessarily governed by only economic factors but factors
such as equality of all human beings and equal opportunity for all.
The focal point on which we leveraged all our interventions is the empowerment of
women through thrift and credit groups wherein participation, inter-dependence,
knowledge enhancement, sharing of knowledge and sustainability are key tenets.

The Rationale of our focus on women and self-help groups is primarily to converge
three key elements of sustainable development. The first is socio-economic
empowerment of poor communities, the second is leadership development, the
third is knowledge enhancement & management. In other words, while we work in
general communities offering a variety of services, our success is determined by
the communities, managing, governing and carrying this development process
through a structured mechanism into poor communities.
It would be important at the outset to mention that with a core group of 25,000
members our outreach service among the slum communities would be meeting a
general population of close to half a million urban poor people.

In Saahasee’s 23 years of experience as a development agency we have come upon

a rather appropriate "model" of developing sustainable interventions in the urban
poor communities in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Bangalore and New Delhi. Within the
economically driven emphases of our modern day world, it is a great challenge to
continually retain dimensions of caring, sharing, with the so called non-productive
groups ( the children, in firmed, the sick, the aged, the widowed etc.) and even
more to explore ways and means in which they continue to be a productive part of
our urban society.

Saahasee in the recent past made strategic alliances with our community
development approaches, interfacing our efforts with other stakeholders that
impact decision making and subsequently the quality of life in poor communities.

Saahasee have also interfaced our interventions with civil society in an attempt to
improve the quality of life in the city. Saahasee as a national NGO strives towards
building linkages so as to improve the life of the urban poor , their families, their
communities in the city and our nation as a whole.
Vision of saahasee

Saahasee is called to see the poor in our nation empowered and celebrating life in
community where dignity, freedom and justice prevail”.

They can be better managers of their money. Unemployment is on the rise

and is an established reality. The dehuman conditions of the city slums in our
country require strategic and collective action to improve economic opportunities,
living standards and social status of the poor. Towards this, Saahasee has
responded with its health and financial services in slum populations of Mumbai,
Delhi, Pune and Bangalore.
Project Objectives

Motivation:

While being future managers understanding the condition of employees is of

great importance. For this purpose stepping out of the comfort zone and getting
involved with reality is something that needs to be done. Saahasee has helped me
in doing exactly this. I have got an opportunity of meeting the real world,
understanding their standard of living, responding to their needs in whichever way
possible.

Overview:

An overview of my project is that we visited Saahasee projects at

Ambewadi, Kisan Nagar, Ram Nagar, Sathe Nagar and Tekdi Pada. I met all the
Saahasee staff working at these places. I interacted with people living nearby these
localities.
Women and young girls who benefited from various courses conducted in
Saahasee were a pleasure to meet. I got to know their level of thinking, areas of
improvement and many more things.
DAYS WE WORKED (INCLUSIVE ALL HOLIDAYS)

The day before I started our NGO internship, (14th-26th january) I had to go
to NGO to meet Mrs. Poonam Nair for schedule of the other days.
Two projects namely:-
1. Save the Girl Child.
2. Skill Development
From 14th January I started our project ‘SAVE THE GIRL CHILD’.
14th January:

I was guided to go to lokmanya nagar in thane, sahasees branch- pragati mahila

bachat sangthan.

I was guided to how to work upon the project.

I had to do the ‘Door-to-door’ survey; for that we had prepared questions such as:-

Q1. What’s your view about female infanticide?

Q2. Are you happy with a girl child in the family?

Q3.Wil you educate your daughter as per her wish?

Q4. Do you treat your son/daughter equally?

Q5. What’s your view about child marriage? Has any such happened here?

Q6 Is the women/girls in your family working? If not why?

Q7. What’s your view about domestic violence? Any such case happened here?

Q8. What is your view about eve teasing?

Q9. What you know about the NGO? How is the NGO helping the locality
women?
After preparing the questions we went for our door-to-door survey. We interacted
with North Indian (UP) community there. Women here were most of them working
as like making paapads in contract of daily basis and getting paid for daily or
monthly depending upon the numbers they make. But there were many women
who were housewives and not allowed to work to support their family. We also
found there that Sahasee work coordinately with helpage group people, who has a
mobile clinic and comes to the area to provide medicines at 10rs per medicine to
senior citizens per fifteen days. This mobile clinic also has a doctor within it who
gives a free checkup and a prescription or a letter for major diseases. Also, the
locality women and saahasee members were given awareness about the major
diseases like tuberculosis, HIV Aids; etc.
HELPAGE AMBULANCE-MOBILE CLINIC
16th January:-

I was guided to Sathe nagar- AMBEWADI MAHILA BACHAT SANGHTAN-1,

Sahasees other branch in Thane. We found there mix community of Maharashtra
people and South Indian Community i.e. Karnataka people. We surveyed with
same questions there. It was again a door to door survey. Women here mostly were
housewives and looked after their family. Here, the families supported their
daughter for studies.

After the second day I 3 took a leave on 17th january(Friday) with their permission
as I had to attend my College. And Saturday Sunday was week off for Me.
22nd January

I went to Tekdipada- Sahara Mahila Bachat Sanghtan, other branch of Sahasee in

Thane. There were three community basically there including Rajasthanis
particular community, Karnataka community and UP community. There the
women working were maximum working as house maids. From there we got the
information that thought they were willing to educate their daughters they were not
able because of poverty.
23rd january:

I was guided to go to Kisan Nagar- AMBEWADI MAHILA BACHAT

SANGHTAN -2 and Ram Nagar- MUKTI MAHILA BACHAT
SANGHTAN. There in both places we teamed up women to ask our survey
questions. Everyone responded positively to the questions we asked.
In kisan Nagar, we got a case of domestic violence (can’t disclose the case
facts). Here, the women were not working anywhere they were all
housewives. The girls here were all going to school and colleges compared
to other areas.
24th January

I went to main branch of Sahasee to submit our project. We submitted our projects
to Mrs. Poonam Nair and discussed the findings I got. And we greeted each other
and called the day off.
LEARNINGS:

• Functioning of a NGO.

• Convincing skills.

• Opportunity to talk with different communities.

• Exposure to real world.

FINDINGS:

• Old thinking is slowly converting to modern thinking, about the rights of

‘GIRL CHILD’.

• Encouragement for women empowerment is prevailing.

• Though there is still crime; people have stopped blaming girls or women for
the cause.
RECOMMENDATIONS:

• Growth in the expansion of more centers in the slum area.

• Expansion of the NGO projects handling in an effective manner.

• Proper coordination among each and every staff is essential.

• Make a suggestion box for improvement in the NGO.

• Appointing more staffs in management levels for smooth work (with some
previous) experience.
