Circulatory System

_____________________________________________________________________________

Central Focus/Big Idea: Understand how structures and systems of organisms (to include the human
body) perform functions necessary for life.

Subject of this lesson: Life Science, Circulatory System

Grade Level: 5th Grade

NC Essential Standard(s): Students know that there are many systems in the human body. Some of
these systems are: • Circulatory System (heart, blood, vessels) • Respiratory System (nose, trachea, lungs)
• Skeletal System (bones) • Muscular System (muscles) • Digestive System (mouth, esophagus, stomach,
intestines) • Nervous System (brain, spinal cord, nerves) Students know that each system performs a
special life process function and that the systems work together to maintain health and fitness.

Next Generation Science Standard(s):

MS-LS1- Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting
3. subsystems composed of groups of cells.

21 Century Skills: Think Creatively- through creating the diagram of the circulatory system.
st

Health Literacy- knowing how your circulatory system helps your body

Academic Language Demand

● Language Function: Explain how the main organs of the circulatory system function.
Describe the function of the main organs in the circulatory system.

Analyze Argue Categorize Compare/contrast Describe Explain

Interpret Predict Question Retell Summarize

● Scientific Vocabulary: heart, right atrium, vena cava, right ventricle, veins, lungs, left
atrium, aorta, left ventricle, and circulatory system.

Instructional Objective: Know the basic functions of the circulatory system in the human body and
how it works with the other systems.
Prior Knowledge (student): Knowing the general parts of the body.

Content Knowledge (teacher): Knowing more in-depth functions of the organs involved in the
circulatory system, understanding how it works to elaborate and guide the students into better
understanding.

Accommodations for special needs (individual and/or small group): Have students work in
small groups together so that students who need extra assistance with understanding the
information have their peers to help understand.

Materials and Technology requirements: Video, quiz worksheet, outline of body to put
circulatory system in, colored pencils/crayons/markers/pens, Discovery Education for more
information on functions of organs to label.

Total Estimated Time: 1 hour

Source of lesson: Teachers Pay Teachers

Safety considerations: Keeping hands to themselves, working independently and efficiently.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

In your procedure, be sure to include all of the following 5 E’s. Your procedure should be
detailed enough for a colleague to follow. If you will be relying on technology (e.g., a YouTube
video), describe your back up plan thoroughly. Imagine your most novice colleague needing to
teach from your plan. Don’t just answer the questions. Additionally, I expect you to include
possible questions you could ask for each section. This needs to include higher-order questions.

Engage: As a whole group recap of the previous days lesson, go through the slideshow that was
taught the day before. Asking: “What are the three main parts in the circulatory system?” “What
do white blood cells do?”

Explore: Moving into small groups: *Play a video showing how to find a pulse and then
demonstrating with a student.* We will then try to find a pulse in pairs on each other. This will
help to show how the circulatory system is working in all of our bodies every day.

Explanation: “Now we are going to create a diagram of the circulatory system. Using colored
pencils. You will label all of the parts on that I have written on the board and then their
function.” The example created will be on display on the doc cam for students to reference.
Going through and reading off the parts and their function, then answering questions students
may have about the assignment as a whole group.

Elaborate: Students will create the diagram independently, asking questions and using their
available resources (Discovery Education, teacher example, peers, internet) to include the
functions of each part.

Evaluate: Students will be evaluated on their diagram based on the accuracy and correctness of
it. Making sure that the heart, right atrium, vena cava, right ventricle, veins, lungs, left atrium,
aorta, left ventricle, and the overall main function of the circulatory system.

To be completed after the lesson is taught as appropriate.

Assessment Results of all objectives/skills: All students showed proficiency and beginning
understanding of the circulatory system. Correctly labeling the organs and the function of the
organ.

Reflection on lesson: Overall, I feel as though the lesson was successful and very informing
both the students and myself. Over the course of teaching three separate sections of classes the
same lesson I learned from the mistakes I had made previously and was able to teach the lesson
more effectively as a result of doing so. The students enjoyed interacting with their peers in the
class to find the heartbeat and watching an interactive video. While they completed their diagram
of the circulatory system, music was playing in the background and the cooperating teacher
commented that “the students have not worked so diligently all semester” compared to the
amount of work they were able to complete during this lesson. I learned a large new amount of
information on classroom management and just how much preparation you want to have before
going in and teaching a class through this experience. Making sure you fully understand and had
a great handle on the information you are going to be teaching is vital for when students ask
questions, need elaboration on something to fully understand it and to provide them with as
much information and understanding as you are capable of. Through being able to work with
their peers, move around the classroom and listen to music during the activity they were all able
to help each other and enjoy the activity.
