Lesson Cycle Component Estimated Checks for

Time understanding,questions,
monitoring, adjusting, and
assessing

Focus 5 minutes Students will be asked to

Video over the continents make a KWL chart on a piece
And KWL chart of paper and put what they
know, and want to know
about the continents of the
World. They will then watch
a video on the continents and
write down what they have
learned so far. This is to
establish prior knowledge.
Teacher will check for
understanding by checking
the KWL chart

Explanation 15 minutes Teacher will pass out an

Map paper unlabeled map of the World.
While explaining each
continent the students will
label each continent and write
the characteristics of each
continent. Teacher will be
writing these on the board,so
students can copy onto their
notes.
Guided Practice: 10 to 15 minutes Students will each have a
Map game game board of a unlabeled
map, the students will also
have a set of rules, students
roll dice and whatever they
land on the students will label
that continent. They only get
to move spaces if they list one
characteristic of the continent
they rolled. Whoever gets the
most continents wins. Check
for understanding will be the
teacher walking around
answering questions and
watching progress of the
games.

Independent Practice: 10 to 15 minutes Students will complete a

Nearpod nearpod activity on their iPad
over the continents and their
characteristics. Students’
scores are reported to the
teacher so she can assess the
students understanding and
mastery on the concept.

Extension: Oceans and 10 to 15 minutes Students will do the same

Landforms activities, but will add
labeling the types of oceans
and landforms of the
continents.

Closure: Kahoot 5 minutes Students will do a short

Kahoot over the continents. I
will have pictures and
characteristics of the
continents and students will
have to choose the answer of
the right continent quickly.
The results are shown, not by
individual, but as a whole so
the teaching can assess
understanding as a group, and
observe any areas for
reteaching.
Zip Kit Activity: Label the continents!

I will send a gallon bag zip kit home with my students as homework for them to bring back to

class the next day. The instructions and items are in English and Spanish for my ELLs parents,

so if parents need to help, they can easily read the instructions.

This Zip Kit involves labeling the the continents on a map using the velcro labels. The students

will have to match the names to the continents. An example of the map below:
