I have an inherently strong interest in pursing a career in teaching mathematics. Having gained experience working in all school levels, as well as distinct academic and elective activities outside of the traditional class, I bring an individualistic background with diverse ideas to offer. My first teaching experience occurred while I was still a high school student. I volunteered as a peer educator for students taking summer school classes. Additionally, I participated in two elective dual-enrollment courses called “Teachers for Tomorrow”. As a student in this course, I acted as a prospective teacher in both elementary and middle school levels (specifically first, third, sixth, and eight grades). I designed diverse lessons, assisted in designing the classroom, created bulletins for both classes and club activities, and assisted in after school programs. Through my own education at Michigan State University, I have gained student teaching experience in both suburban and urban school districts for the middle and high school levels. I worked with the Refugee Development Center in Lansing, Michigan, where I had the pleasure of helping individuals break down complicated concepts using simple and relatable examples. Working with so many students with distinct backgrounds allowed me to learn how to diversify my speech patterns and allowed me to work to reach each student in a place that worked for them. It was an extremely rewarding experience that I chose to continue on my own time, after the course that had introduced me to the program had ended. As a member of the Global Educators Cohort Program, I had the opportunity to study the field of education in China. I got to experience teaching an English, Math, and Music lesson to students in Beijing and Chongqing, while working to manage the language differences between myself, and the students. While this proved difficult in one school where the students knew less English than I knew Chinese, the gratified feeling that arose when the students sang the small verse brought upon a feeling of euphoria. While studying at City Middle/High school, I taught Math SL 11 and Statistics to tenth and eleventh grade students utilizing the International Baccalaureate curriculum. Tailoring activities to maintain the interest of high-level students without intimidating students that need more time with material, I worked to manage the difference of abilities across classes and students alike. Utilizing differentiated lessons, I was able to teach in ways that could be rewarding for both the students and myself. Enclosed in my online portfolio you will find my resume, as well as references and recommendation letters. I will happily forward an official copy of my transcript as well as answer any questions you may have. Feel free to contact me at (850)797-4761 or smithap5859@gmail.com.
