MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Badminton nets
Badminton rackets
Badminton birdies
Hula hoops

PROCEDURE
Introduction
As they come in from changing: Set up the nets
4 Square Hula Hoop
- Have four hula hoops placed together in a square with (bean bags/pinies).
Students must be in the push up position to play the game with their hands
outside of their hula hoop. They must try and get the bean bags out of their
hula hoop before the time runs up. Every bean bag in your hula hoop is one
point. You want the lowest number of points to win.

Assessments of Prior knowledge: who knows what a net shot is? When would you
use it and why?

Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: Listen to when I am speaking, follow

directions, rackets on the floor when I’m talking

Accommodations:
Low-Management Time: they will already have nets up and rackets, no extra set
up needed

Body
Learning Activity #1: Net Shots
(Demo of a net shot)
“everyone please take a seat around the court! Today we are going to do net
shots.”
Does anyone know what a net shot is?
“a net shot is when you hit the birdie just over top of the net. If you can get it to
just skim the tape, then that’s a perfect net shot.”

Keys:
You want to position your racket just at the net with a slight tilt. The goal is to let
the birdie hit your racket and just tap right over the net. You still want to have
your follow through, but you are not hitting the birdie, you’re just letting it hit off
your racket.”
“you want to lunge with the same foot as your racket because you can cover more
ground faster that way, and have the racket up at face/net level. If you hold it to
low it wont work properly!”

Show them what it looks like – emphasize stance from yesterday and approaching
the birdie with shuffle steps while in the low athletic stance.

Game: “you are going to rally back and forth within the boundaries of the service
line, the net and the sides (playing in the front court). The only way you can get a
point is if it hits the tape and goes over.”
(groups of 4 – doubles)

Assessment/Differentiation:

Key Questions:
How can you use net shots in a game to gain advantage over your teammates?
What is a net shot and when do you use it?

Learning Activity #2: Modified Kings Court

You will be playing doubles kings court where there are two teams playing
against each other and one team off to the side waiting.

When you are playing, try and start off with side to side, and then as one player
hits the birdie, you transfer to front and back. Side to side is more defensive
where front to back is better for an attack
The right side of the court is Kings court
If you win on king’s court you get 1 point. If you lose on kings court you come off.
If you win on the queen’s court, you move up to kings court, if you lose on queens
court you come off.

Assessment/ differentiation:

Key Questions:
How can you use your clears, and your net shots to your advantage in a game?
Did you try front and back and side to side again? How did that help you in the
game?

Closure
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: How did you use net shots in your doubles
games, did your stance from yesterday help you?

Feedback from Students: what are the keys to hitting a net shot?
Feedback to Students: good job today!
Transition to Next Lesson: tomorrow we are going to try some new games!
