1. Design a sleeve coupling to transmit 10 kW at 200 RPM. Allowable value of shear stress and
compressive stress for the shaft and key material may be taken as 60 MPa and 130 MPa
respectively. Use allowable shear stress in CI sleeve equal to 15 MPa.
2. Design a protected type flange coupling to transmit a power between two shafts of 40 mm
diameter. The allowable shear stress for shaft is taken as 50 MPa and allowable shear stress for
bolt and key are taken as 45 MPa. Allowable crushing stress for key is 120 MPa and allowable
shear stress for flange is 10 MPa.
3. Design and socket and spigot type cotter joint to connect two rods subjected to steady axial pull
of 100 kN. Material used for spigot and socket and cotter is C40, having a tensile yield strength
of 326.6 MPa and take FOS as 4 for tension, 6 for shear and 3 for crushing based on the tensile
yield strength.
4. Design knuckle joint for tie rod of circular section to sustain maximum pull of 70 kN. The
ultimate strength of the material of the rod against the tearing is 420 MPa, ultimate tensile and
shear strength of pin material are 510 MPa and 396 MPa respectively. Determine the tie rod and
pin section. Take FOS as 6.

1. Design an Oldham coupling to transmit 5 kW at 1000 RPM. Maximum allowable pressure

between faces of slot and sunk 8 MPa, allowable value of shear stress and compressive stress for
shaft and key material is 40 MPa and 80 MPa respectively.
2. Design and draw a CI flange coupling for a mild steel shaft transmitting 90 kW at 250 RPM.
Allowable shear stress in the shaft is 40 MPa and angle of twist is not to exceed 1 degree.
Consider L = 20d. The allowable shear stress in the coupling bolts is 30 MPa.
3. It is required to design a cotter joint to connect two steel rods of equal diameter, each rod is
subjected to axial tensile force of 50 kN. Design the joint and specify its main dimension. Assume
C45 material for cotter joint.
4. Design and sketch assembly of knuckle joint to connect two mild steel rods subjected to an axial
pull of 100 kN. Allowable stresses for rods and pin are 120 MPa, 140 MPa and 80 MPa in tension,
crushing and shear respectively.

1. Design a CI flexible flange coupling to transmit 18 kW at 1440 RPM. The allowable stresses for
shaft, keys and bolts are 75 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in crushing. Allowable shear stress in CI
flange is 15 MPa.
2. Design a rigid flange coupling to transmit 18 kW at 1440 RPM. Allowable shear stress in the CI
flange is 4 MPa. The shaft and keys are made of AISI1040 annealed steel with ultimate strength
and yield stress value as 518.8 MPa and 353.4 MPa respectively. Use ASME code to design the
shaft and key.
3. Design a socket and spigot type cotter joint to sustain axial load of 100 kN. The material selected
for the joint has following design stresses. Design stress in tension= 120 MPa, in crushing 150
MPa, in shear 60 MPa.
4. It is required to design a knuckle joint to connect two circular rods subjected to axial tensile
force of 50 kN. The rods are coaxial and a small amount of angular moment between their axes
is permissible. Design the joint and specify the dimension of its components. Select the suitable
material for the parts.
