Only 15 (5.8%) of the 256 standard-form categorical syllogisms (AAA-1

through OOO-4) are valid. The other 241 (94.1%) are invalid. Here are
the 15 valid standard-form categorical syllogisms (SFCSs), arranged by
figure:

Students in the Middle Ages memorized the following poem to help them
remember the valid SFCSs:

Barbara, Celarent, Darii, Ferioque prioris;

Cesare, Camestres, Festino, Baroco secundae;
Tertia, Darapti, Disamis, Datisi, Falepton,
Bocardo, Ferison habet: quarta insuper addit
Bramantip, Camenes, Dimaris, Fesapo, Fresison.

The place names in the cells (e.g., “Canada”) may be easier for you to re-
member than the Latin names (if you choose to commit the 15 valid
SFCSs to memory).
