Third Sunday of Easter
This week the City of Boston is honored to host the Boston Marathon. We have a tradition here at
St. Anthony Shrine at all of the Sunday Masses and the Saturday Vigil Masses on Marathon
Weekend. After communion, we call the runners to the front of the church in order give them a
special blessing. I am always somewhat taken aback by the number of runners who come up for
the blessing and the warm support that they receive from the rest of the congregation. For the
runners, good luck in the race. And for the visitors, have a great time in this city!
The Shrine community continues to be very grateful for the terrific partnership that we have with
the Boston Police Department. They do an enormous amount of work behind the scenes to make
the neighborhood safe for everyone who visits the Shrine. They are also very good about working
with us in order to help us serve the neighborhood’s homeless population in a respectful way.
This is a somewhat delicate balancing act, but we have no better partners in this endeavor. Special
thanks to Mayor Marty Walsh, Commissioner William Evans, and Captain Kenneth Fong of
District A-1. The Boston Police work plenty of overtime during Marathon Weekend. We pray
that the weekend goes well for them!
This trip we will travel to rural Puerto Rico and partner with the Fuller Center for Housing working repairing homes
in village struggling to recover from the effects of last Fall’s hurricane.
St. Francis Builds is part retreat, part mission trip where we reflect together on Franciscan values Franciscan values
like Solidarity with the Poor, Cross-Cultural Bridge-Building, Justice and Peace, Simplicity of Lifestyle, Community,
Humility, and Mission and then put them in to practice in giving a family a hand up in restoring their home.
Space is limited. No skills are needed, training provided. Cost is $950. Plus airfare. Ages 16 and up.
