IS09019D SNMP Upgrade Procedure for NV
Transmitters
INFORMATION SHEET
1 INTRODUCTION
The NV series FM transmitters are microprocessor controlled units. Periodically,
enhancements or improvements to the operating system are identified and made available.
This requires a software update.

1.1 Equipment Affected

This procedure applies to NV series FM transmitters.

1.2 Responsibility for Implementation of Procedure

This procedure should be carried out by qualified station maintenance personnel who are
familiar with the NV series FM transmitters.

1.3 Scheduling
Implement this procedure at the convenience of station maintenance personnel. The
transmitter can remain ‘on-air’ during this procedure.

1.4 Manpower Requirements

This modification will require 30 minutes to complete.

1.5 Special Tools/Test Equipment

The following test equipment is required:

• laptop (i.e., local computer for direct connection) or network computer with Windows and
Internet Explorer Web browser
• CAT5 Ethernet cable
• USB keyboard
• software file NV_MIB_date_version.zip
The minimum date and version of this file is NV_MIB_051711_V_1_4.zip. This .zip file
contains the following files:
snmp_agent_2.zip (for the transmitter)
NAUTEL_MIB.txt (for the remote monitoring computer)
NAUTEL_NV_MIB.txt (for the remote monitoring computer)

2 PRELIMINARY CHECKS

(a) SNMP monitoring should only be installed on NV transmitters with transmitter software
release 2.6 or higher (within the 2.x series). Contact Nautel if you are unsure of the
present transmitter software status.

(b) Nautel does not recommend distributing the files using email as this may corrupt the
SNMP agent file.

3 TRANSFERRING UPGRADE FILE
The following steps assume either a laptop will be used to connect directly to the transmitter
OR the transmitter and network computer are currently connected to the same network.

3.1 Unzipping Software File to PC

(a) Unzip the provided file “NV_MIB_date_version.zip” to the computer being used to upload
files to the transmitter.

(b) When the file has been unzipped, the following files should be present on the computer:

snmp_agent_2.zip (do not unzip this file)

NAUTEL_MIB.txt
NAUTEL_NV_MIB.txt

3.2 Transmitter IP Configuration

(a) From the transmitter AUI, go to Menu/ Software Configuration / Network Setup.

(b) Record your current network settings (IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway).

(c) If the transmitter and network computer are connected to the same network, proceed to
step (o). If connecting directly from a laptop to the transmitter, select ‘Static IP’ and set as
follows on the AUI:

IP Address: 10.10.10.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Press Apply then Reboot Now.

(d) Set the transmitter for Remote control.

(e) The following steps assume the laptop operating system is Windows XP. Adapt as
required for computers with different operating systems.

(f) On the laptop, go to Start Menu / Control Panel / Network Connections / Local Area
Network.

(g) In the Local Area Network Status, open the General tab and choose Properties. Scroll
down and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Choose Properties.

(h) In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, select Use the following IP
address.

(i) Enter the following settings:

IP Address: 10.10.10.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

(j) In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, select OK.

(k) In the Local Area Connection Properties window, select OK.

(l) In the Local Area Connection Status window, select Close.

(m) Close the Network Connections window.

(n) Connect the laptop network interface card to the transmitter LAN port (A1J21 on the
control/interface PWB) using a CAT5 Ethernet cable.

(o) Open Internet Explorer. If using a network computer enter the IP address recorded in
step 3.2 (b). If using a laptop, enter 10.10.10.2. The transmitter login screen should
appear.

(p) At the transmitter login screen enter:

User: Nautel or ****

Password: none (default) or ****

**** denotes an alternate user assigned password and user name of an account that has
Super User or Read/Write permission level.

(q) Navigate through the AUI to Menu / Software Configuration / Upgrade Software and
press Browse. Locate software update file snmp_agent_2.zip. Press Upload to load the
file into the transmitter boot image list.

(r) Close the web browser application.

4 UNZIP THE SNMP AGENT FILES

(a) Set the transmitter to either RF Off or RF On state.

(b) Set the transmitter for Local control. Perform the following steps locally (in front of the
transmitter AUI).

(c) Connect a USB keyboard to any of the four ports of the single-board computer (SBC)
located on the rear of the transmitter’s front door.

(d) Press and hold the Alt key and press the F2 key. A mostly blank screen will appear on
the AUI.

(e) Press and hold the Alt key and press the R key. A menu will appear.

(f) Press the down arrow key to highlight Terminals. Press the right arrow key. A sub menu
will appear.

(g) Highlight xterm and press the Enter key. A terminal window will appear displaying a
Linux command prompt.

(h) Navigate to the directory where the files will be extracted by typing the following and
pressing the Enter key:

cd /readwrite

(i) Type the following command and press the Enter key to move the snmp_agent_2.zip
file to the proper directory.

mv /readwrite/firmware/snmp_agent_2.zip snmp_agent_2.zip

(j) Back up the current startup script by typing the following:

cp startup startup.bak

(k) Type the following command and press the Enter key to unzip the files for the SNMP
patch.

unzip snmp_agent_2.zip

(l) The user may be prompted to replace a file. Press the A key and the Enter key to
replace all files. The files will be listed as they decompress.

(m) Press and hold the Alt key and press the F1 key. The AUI will be displayed again.

(n) This completes the software upgrade in the transmitter. Restore the former network
settings on the transmitter and laptop as required [see step 3.2 (b)].

(o) From the transmitter AUI, go to Menu/ Software Configuration / Network Setup, and
set the network settings (IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway) recorded in step
3.2 (b).

(p) From the transmitter AUI, go to Menu / Software Configuration / Maintenance and
press Reboot AUI.

5 MONITORING STATION SOFTWARE FILES
Perform the following steps on a remote monitoring computer with network connectivity to the
transmitter. The computer must have its own third party SNMP client application previously
installed. The following steps are general. Exact details for testing the SNMP agent depend
on the SNMP client application being used.

NOTE
To access SNMP through a firewall, ports 161 and 162 on the customer network/firewall/ISP
must be left open and set to UDP mode to allow UDP traffic.

(a) Launch the SNMP client application.

(b) Load the NAUTEL-MIB.txt file.

(c) For NV transmitters load the NAUTEL-NV-MIB.txt file.

(d) Set Agent Port to ‘161’.

(e) Set SNMP version to ‘1’.

(f) Set Read Community to ‘public’.

(g) Set Write Community to ‘private’.

(h) Set User to ‘root’.

(i) Set Password to ‘123456’.

(j) Point the SNMP client application to the transmitter’s IP address.

(k) Issue an SNMP WALK command to retrieve all available information from the transmitter.

(l) Issue an SNMP GET command to retrieve data for a single item.

(m) Remote users will have basic transmitter control including RF on/off, power control and
exciter selection. They will also be able to monitor alarms, status information and analog
voltages representing power supply and RF power levels.

(n) The procedure is complete.
