Lifestyle Diseases

Hypertension in Children

Name: Shahine Porter

Grade: 10w
Subject: English Language
Teacher: Ms Richards
The topic that my group decided on is Lifestyle Diseases.
I have made a list of tasks that I have done to complete
my portfolio.

1. I have specified the type of lifestyle disease I researched on

which is Hypertension in Children.

2. I have researched information with different sources of data on

Hypertension in Children making sure that the research
techniques are sound.

3. I have made a Plan of Investigation

4. I have presented my plan to the teacher and have gotten

feedback, suggestions and responses.
5. I have prepared and completed my official portfolio.

Reasons why topic was chosen

The topic that my group and I chose was Lifestyle diseases. One
main reason why we chose this topic was because lifestyle diseases
can be widely discussed in many ways and numerous sub-topics can
be drawn out of it. We also chose this topic because several people
can relate to it, whether if they have a lifestyle disease or if they
know someone with a lifestyle disease. The reason why I decided
that this topic was a good idea also because it interests me. I am
interested to learn about a certain lifestyle disease, its causes,
effects and how to prevent it.
Three different forms of collected data that relate to my
topic:

1) An article entitled Hypertension in Children by Pediatric Annals in

November 2006.

2) A Video entitled “Primer on Pediatric Hypertension” by The University

of Pittsburgh Medical Center in January 2015.

3) An audio based on Hypertension in Children from the website

Kidshealth.org by Akron’s Children’s Hospital.

The English Language Skill that I Have chosen that I would require to
understand and evaluate my chosen data is Identifying Main Ideas.

Using my data, I can come to a conclusion on my topic by stating that

Hypertension is a common lifestyle disease and that children are also
affected by it and not only adults. I can also state that based on my data
hypertension has causes and effects if treated or not treated well.
Making sure that my research techniques are sound

Three factors that may hinder with the soundness of my conclusions

in my SBA research are:

1. The period of time that the source of data was issued.

2. The age group that the source of data is focusing on.

3. Place of origin that the source of data was issued.

One way I plan to minimize the effects of the factor of the age
group that my sources of data is focusing on is is to make sure that
the article, audio and audio visual that I used is focusing on
Hypertension in children of age 3-18 and not adults or the elderly.

Hypertension may occur at any phase of childhood, from the newborn period through
adolescence. Compared with hypertension in adults, childhood hypertension is
defined differently, and secondary causes of hypertension are detected more
frequently. Children with primary (essential) hypertension can express the same risk
factors for cardiovascular disease that are associated with hypertension as adults,
and children with hypertension can benefit from interventions to control the blood
pressure. An important aspect of blood pressure surveillance in the young is to
distinguish between elevated blood pressure signaling an underlying disease (ie,
secondary hypertension), and elevated blood pressure in childhood as an early
expression of primary hypertension.

The definition of hypertension in adults is ≥ 140/90 mm Hg, regardless of age or

gender. The adult definition of hypertension is based on the level of blood pressure
that is linked with an increase in risk for cardiovascular events.1 No data are yet
available that directly link a threshold level of blood pressure in children with
subsequent cardiovascular events. In the absence of such data, hypertension is
defined statistically.
