* Hymn of Praise
In agreement with our call to worship psalm, verse 3 makes clear
that a primary reason we are to praise our God is that He loves
the righteous and sends judgment on the wicked.
“Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah”
1. Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises, Of my God through all my days.
Put no confidence in princes, Nor for help on man depend;
He shall die, to dust returning, And his purposes shall end.
2. Happy is the man that chooses, Israel’s God to be his aid;
He is blest whose hope of blessing, On the Lord his God is stayed.
Heaven and earth the Lord created, Seas and all that they contain;
He delivers from oppression, Righteousness He will maintain.
3. Food He daily gives the hungry, Sets the mourning prisoner free,
Raises those bowed down with anguish,
Makes the sightless eyes to see,
Well Jehovah loves the righteous, And the stranger He befriends,
Helps the fatherless and widow, Judgment on the wicked sends.
4. Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises, Of my God through all my days.
Over all God reigns forever, Through all ages He is King;
Unto Him, thy God, O Zion, Joyful hallelujahs sing.

* Reading from the Law
The people of Judah prior to the Exile to Babylon had deceived
themselves into thinking that their status precluded God’s judgment,
even if they remained disobedient. They (and we) are commanded
here to repent of believing such nonsense.
Jeremiah 7:1-11 ESV
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Stand in the
gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear
the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to
worship the Lord. 3 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:
Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this
place. 4 Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of
the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’
5 “For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly ex-
ecute justice one with another, 6 if you do not oppress the sojourner,
the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place,
and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, 7 then I
will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your
fathers forever. 8 “Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. 9
Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings
to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, 10 and
then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my
name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these
abominations? 11 Has this house, which is called by my name, become
a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares
the Lord.
Silent Confession of Sin
Corporate Confession of Sin
In this adaptation of the classic Scriptural confession, Psalm 51, we
acknowledge not only our sin, but also the fact that God desires
not only confession but also repentance, and we pray that God will
give us just that.
“God, Be Merciful to Me”
1. God, be merciful to me; On Thy grace I rest my plea
Plenteous in compassion Thou, Blot out my transgressions now;
Wash me, make me pure within; Cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin.
2. My transgressions I confess; Grief and guilt my soul oppress.
I have sinned against Thy grace, And provoked Thee to Thy face.
I confess Thy judgement just; Speechless, I Thy mercy trust.
3. I am evil, born in sin; Thou desirest truth within.
Thou alone my Savior art, Teach Thy wisdom to my heart;
Make me pure, Thy grace bestow, Wash me whiter than the
snow.
4. Broken, humbled to the dust By Thy wrath and judgment just,
Let my contrite heart rejoice, And in gladness hear Thy voice;
From my sins O hide Thy face, Blot them out in boundless grace.
5. Gracious God, my heart renew, Make my spirit right and true.
Cast me not away from Thee, Let Thy Spirit dwell in me;
Thy salvation’s joy impart, Steadfast make my willing heart.
6. Sinners then shall learn from me, And return, O God, to Thee
Savior all my guilt remove, And my tongue shall sing Thy love
Touch my silent lips, O Lord, And my mouth shall praise accord.

We rejoice in the ASSurAnce of forgiveneSS
* Assurance of Pardoning Grace
God is faithful not only to forgive those who confess their sins in
true repentance, but also actually to cleanse them from their
sin, working good deeds in them. This is an integral part of the
message of the gospel.
I John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Hymn of Assurance
True faith results in some measure of works of obedience, which
in turn give the faithful a measure of assurance, not because they
merit God’s favor, but because they are evidence of true faith (I
John 2:4; 3:10, 18-22).

* Titus 2:1-15 ESV
1But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. 2 Older
men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in
faith, in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be
reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They
are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love
their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at
home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word
of God may not be reviled. 6 Likewise, urge the younger men to
be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of
good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound
speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put
to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. 9 Bondservants are
to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be
well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good
faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our
Savior. 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all
people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions,
and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present
age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of
our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to
redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for
his own possession who are zealous for good works. 15 Declare these
things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard
you.

* “Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken”
1. Jesus, I my cross have taken,
All to leave and follow Thee.
Destitute, despised, forsaken,
Thou from hence my all shall be.
Perish every fond ambition,
All I’ve sought or hoped or known.
Yet how rich is my condition!
God and heaven are still my own.
2. Let the world despise and leave me,
They have left my Savior, too.
Human hearts and looks deceive me;
Thou art not, like them, untrue.
O while Thou dost smile upon me,
God of wisdom, love, and might,
Foes may hate and friends disown me,
Show Thy face and all is bright.
3. Man may trouble and distress me,
’Twill but drive me to Thy breast.
Life with trials hard may press me;
Heaven will bring me sweeter rest.
Oh, ’tis not in grief to harm me
While Thy love is left to me;
Oh, ’twere not in joy to charm me,
Were that joy unmixed with Thee.
4. Go, then, earthly fame and treasure,
Come disaster, scorn and pain
In Thy service, pain is pleasure,
With Thy favor, loss is gain
I have called Thee Abba Father,
I have stayed my heart on Thee
Storms may howl, and clouds may gather;
All must work for good to me.
5. Soul, then know thy full salvation
Rise o’er sin and fear and care
Joy to find in every station,
Something still to do or bear.
Think what Spirit dwells within thee,
Think what Father’s smiles are thine,
Think that Jesus died to win thee,
Child of heaven, canst thou repine.
6. Haste thee on from grace to glory,
Armed by faith, and winged by prayer.
Heaven’s eternal days before thee,
God’s own hand shall guide us there.
Soon shall close thy earthly mission,
Soon shall pass thy pilgrim days,
Hope shall change to glad fruition,
Faith to sight, and prayer to praise.
