Name of game- It is an african dance. Waka Waka (Shakira) An updated version of the song
“Zangalewa” which is originated from Africa originally by Cameroonian Band

Equipment needed- a phone to play the music, a speaker, an aux cord to plug the phone and
speaker together.

Safety Consideration- just make sure students have on tennis shoes or comfortable shoes to
move in and will not slip during dance

NASPE Grade Level Standard Focus- MULTICULTURAL- STANDARD 4- The

Physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self
and others.
 Demonstrates correct rhythm and pattern for a different dance form from among folk,
social, creative, line and world dance. (S1.M1.7)

Educational Objectives- The song was used during the 2010 Soccer World Cup, as a tribute
to Johannesburg, South Africa for being the country that hosted the world cup. During the 2010
showdown, Spain defeated the Netherlands. The song is actually sang in english but also
spanish, as Shakira is from Columbia. Students will take on basic footwork while also acquiring
teamwork, as they will dance with a partner and switch up during the dance.

Directions- The first part of the song will start with a freestyle for 8 counts. They will then
move to their partner and put their hands up like they are giving high fives. They will then hold
that position while they move their left and right foot in and then out (switching in between) they
will do this for 3 eight counts. When Shakira comes in singing they will freestyle for one eight
count to an open spot and then we will first start by doing a “grape vine” (step to the right and
left leg crosses to the back, and repeat. Then go the other way so you are stepping with left and
your right leg is crossing in the back) After each completed grape vine you will clap and then do
praying hands (right left, right, left) and then go to next grape vine. SONG IS VERY UPBEAT
AND A NICE TEMPO
PARTNER DANCE STEPS:
 Step 1: get a partner and line up face to face
 Step 2: put your hands up together like you are giving high fives (hands pressed
together)
 Step 3: You are going to move your right foot out and then bring it back in
 Step 4: you are going to move your left foot out and then bring it back in
 Step 5: keep doing these back to back for 3 eight counts
ON YOUR OWN STEPS
 Step 1- step up with your right foot
 Step 2- step up with your left foot (feet being side by side now)
 Step 3- step back with your right foot
 Step 4- step back with your left foot (should be side by side again)
 Step 5- you will now step in place for two steps
 Step 6- now we will incorporate our hands. Put hands together like you are praying.
o ELBOWS UP
 Step 7- you will go right left, right left, with the praying hands when you step with your
feet
 Step 8- you will then do praying hands to the center and push them to the front two times
 Step 9- throw your arms up in the air twice (throw 1, throw 2)
DEMO:
 I will start by doing a demo of the song
 I will then teach them the steps with no music
 After I feel they have the steps, I will turn music on and go through it twice with music
with them
 After they pick it up, I will change the song. I will have them dance to “One Last Time”
by Ariana Grande (a slower tempo)
 After doing that a few times, I will let them practice and switch partners

Extensions/Adaptations- extensions will be doing a demo to the dance first. I will then show
the steps without music. I will then change the song and let them feel the dance to a different
beat and see how they adapt to it. When we do the second dance, we will turn it to a line dance
we turn and face different walls after each 8 count completed.
