This week we will be reading “Let’s Hear it for
Almigal” written by Wendy Kupfer and illustrated
by Tammie Lyon. This book has 3 awards, Best
Children’s Picture Book in the National Indie
Excellence Awards, Gold winning Mom’s Choice
Award for Children’s Picture Book for “Values &
Life Lessons”, and the 2012 Silver Medal Winner for
Florida Publishers Association President’s Book
Award. This great book is being incorporated into
the lesson for the children to strengthen their
reading and inferencing abilities. This lesson will allow children to make
inferences about the book before reading and we will discuss after
whether they were correct about inferences. This is a book the children
will be able to connect with easily, creating am interest for them to read.
There are other books like “Let’s Hear it for Almigal” you can use at home
to engage your child in reading such as; “Hands and Hearts” written by
Donna Jo Napoli and illustrated by Amy Bates, “Maxi’s Super Ears” by
Maggie Klein, and “Lucy” by Sally O. Lee. All of these books can be
purchased from Amazon.
A good community resource to get your children engaged is the local
library. It has many events to get your child engaged in reading. There are
also websites you can use to get your child interested such as;
starfall.com which allows the children to read stories and click words for
help, storylineonline.net, which has videos of people reading stories
along with animation, and abcya.com which has games that involve
vocabulary.
