How do you bake Entry Level In this entry level assessment, I will
a cake? give students a recipe for baking a
cake. I will ask students to discuss why
specific amounts of each ingredient is
required. I would proceed to lead the
conversation about what would happen
if more than the required amount was
provided or what would happen if
someone was provided with less than
the required amount. How would this
affect their ability to cook? How would
this affect the cake in terms of quality,
size, etc.? This would lead to the
concept of ratios and how there are
ratios required for cooking which leads
to the conversation of specific ratios to
chemical reactions.
Mole Diagram Formative Students will be given a blank piece of
paper and will be asked to design their
own graphic organizer or an illustration
that explains the relationship between
the number of atoms, the number of
moles, and the grams of a compound.
Students will highlight their
understanding of their concept by
designing creative ways to present the
relationship between the three forms of
representations. It will also strengthen
their understanding of the relationships
between the three.
Balancing Formative Students will balance a variety of
Equations chemical reactions with their groups.
The chemical reactions will vary in
difficulty. Students are encouraged to
converse and discuss the best way to
solve the problem and to help each
other identify flaws in their process. If
students understand the logical
approach towards the application of
ratios to solve chemical reactions,
students will be able to effectively
balance chemical equations. Feedback
will be provided after students finish
balancing chemical reactions. The
assessment will provide students to
practice balancing chemical reactions
as a skill. It also allows the teacher to
gauge students’ ability to balance
chemical reactions of varying
difficulty.
Quizizz: Formative Students, in groups, will compete to
Balancing Moles answer various questions. The
questions will review everything
learned up to this point which includes
balancing chemical reactions and mole
conversions. Students will have to
recall knowledge from previous lessons
and apply it to the information
displayed in the classroom. This
formative assessment will assure the
teacher that the students are ready to
move onto the next step in
stoichiometry that combines the two
concepts to answer questions regarding
ratios of reactants. If students are
struggling in this step, the teacher must
further review these two concepts
before proceeding to stoichiometry.
Stoichiometry Formative Students will be given a set of 4
Mini Lab balanced chemical reactions. For each
chemical reaction, students will be
given specific amounts of reactants.
Using the specified amounts, students
will predict the theoretical yield of each
reaction and then proceed to perform a
mini-lab procedure to obtain the
experimental yield. Students will
compare their results and discuss their
calculations in terms of their accuracy.
This assessment will highlight whether
or not students understand the concepts
behind stoichiometry by allowing them
to see if their calculations reflect the
experimental data. It also test the
students ability to identify proper error
in their calculations or their own
experimental procedure therefore
assessing their ability to discern types
of error. It also provides practice for
future assessments.
Stoichiometry Summative The test will assess their ability to
Test perform accurate calculations that
mirror their understanding of the
concepts underlaying chemical
reactions. Students will also have to
explain why reactants may be left over
after a reaction and explain why
scientists observe disproportional ratios
between amounts of chemicals in terms
of grams. If students are successful, it
will highlight the students
understanding of the concepts
underlying stoichiometry as well as the
mathematical logic behind the
calculations being performed.
Production of Summative Students will combine their knowledge
Copper (II) of past laboratory procedures with their
current knowledge of stoichiometry to
Carbonate Lab design a laboratory procedure to create
Report 1.00g of Copper (II) Carbonate.
Students will be given an initial
procedure to test that provides the
basics into create Copper (II)
Carbonate. As students test the beta
procedure, students will have to refine
the procedure and improve the
procedure using practices utilized in
scientific notebooks. The assessment
will test their ability to understand
basic chemistry concepts combined
with their understanding of
stoichiometry to use appropriate
amounts of reactants to create the
desired amount of product. Students
will also have to argue why any errors
occurred in their procedure as well as
explain the reasoning behind each step.
