MULTI-MEDIA AUTHORING TEMPLATE

Name: Chenia Brown

PART A: Describe how students could create and publish an original movie, audio file, podcast, or vodcast in order to achieve
required learning standards. Challenge: For an “A” provide an idea where the learning activity reaches a LoTi level 4a or
above. To do this you will have to design a project where students engage in higher-order thinking and publish their work to an
audience that will use or care about the results. Broad feedback for their work is also a great way to boost interest and
performance.
Grade Level: 6th Grade

Earth Science
S6E5. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to show how Earth’s surface is formed.
c. Construct an explanation of how to classify rocks by their formation and how rocks change
through geologic processes in the rock cycle.
Brief Description of Learning Experience: As you address the standards, what will students and teachers do? How will
the project be introduced? How long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the multimedia projects
students are creating? How broad is this audience? How will student work be assessed and by whom? Who will provide
feedback to students about their work? (Overview should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs)
At the end of the unit about rock cycles, students will have the opportunity to create their own song about the rock cycle using
multimedia authoring tools. Students will need to create a song in a way that will help someone who doesn’t know anything
about the rock cycle, learn the geologic processes rocks undergo. The project will be introduced by the teacher
performing/playing an example of a song created about the rock cycle for students. There will be a list of vocabulary words and
topics students are to use in the song in order to demonstrate their knowledge of the content. They will play their song to the rest
of the students in the class, as well as students from other periods.
Students will have 2 days to brainstorm, draft, and create a final product for their song. Students will also have the opportunity to
self-assess their own work as well as assess their peers’ work during the drafting phase. The students’ work will be assessed by
the teacher based on the lyrics to their song and how well they have demonstrated understanding of the content.
Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: What LoTi level would this lesson be and Why?
This lesson would be LoTi level 5: Expansion because the learning experience is student-centered, and students would be
using digital resources exclusively to accomplish learning outcomes beyond conventional strategies.
Importance of technology: Why is using a multimedia authoring tools critical to the project? Could the project be
completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of technology, if any, are
going to be used in the learning experience?
Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to this project because it allows students to create authentic products and solve
student-centered problems using all available resources. It is possible that students could create a song without using these tools
however it takes away a huge technological aspect of the project. Without the multimedia component of the lesson, the LoTi
levels would decrease from 5 to 3, students may not have the same engagement/motivation, and several opportunities for students
to show their creativity using these tools will be lost.

Inspiration (optional): If you used existing multimedia projects as a model for your project (whether in part or whole),
include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you “borrowed” from others. N/A
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding internet safety and student
privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how you’d minimize risks to
students/yourself, alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and follow school districts’ Internet Safety/Use Policy.
In order to minimize any concerns about student privacy and internet safety, students will be using computers at the school,
which should be programmed to not allow student access to unsafe browsers. Also, students will email me their final product, so
their work will be safe from exposure to an unwanted audience.
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity: N/A
