Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Selena Garrett, Brooke Moyer, Sarah Boccella

Date:
Group Size: Groups of 4 Allotted Time: 30 minutes
Grade Level: 3rd

Subject or Topic: Heart

Common Core/PA Standards:

Standard - 10.1.2.B1
Identify and describe functions of major body organs and systems.

Learning Targets/Objectives:
 The students will be able to identify the functions of the heart by listening to the
teacher’s instruction and completing the activity.
 Students will be able to comprehend how much blood the heart pumps per day and
per minute.
 Students will be able to discuss in groups how much blood the heart holds.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. The teacher will use “thumbs-up 1. If a child puts their thumb down, the
thumbs-down” to see if the teacher will go over the information
students are understanding. again.
2. Students will participate in a 2. If the student cannot answer the
whole class Kahoot by using questions with a 60% accuracy, the
tablets to answer 5 questions. student may need more explicit
instruction to understand the material.
Assessment Scale:
1. Students will put their thumbs up showing that they understand the material. If they
do not understand, they will put their thumbs down.
2. Students will have to be able to complete the Kahoot with 69-79% accuracy.

Subject Matter/Content:

Prerequisites:
 Knowledge and understanding that the heart is a muscular organ
 Understanding that all living things have a heart
 Basic understanding that the heart has multiple functions
 Basic knowledge of cardiovascular system

Key Vocabulary:
 Heart: a muscular organ, located to the left of the middle of your chest, that pumps
blood throughout the body. The organ that pumps blood through the body.
 Heartbeat: a single beat of your heart that you can feel inside your chest.
 Pumps: pushes blood out of the heart, to the rest of the body.
 Gallons: a unit of volume liquid measurement A unit of volume used for measuring
liquids, equal to 4 quarts (3.79 liters)
 Blood: The red liquid that the heart pumps which provides your body with the oxygen
and nutrients it needs. The fluid that circulates through the body of humans and other
vertebrates.
 Ventricle: a chamber of the heart that receives blood from an atrium and pumps it into
the arteries.
 Atrium: a chamber of the heart that receives blood from the veins and pumps it into a
ventricle.
 Artery: a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to all parts of the body.
 Blood Vessel: a tube in the body that carries blood from one part of the body to
another.
 Circulatory System: the system that moves blood through the body, made up of the
heart and blood vessels.

Content/Facts:
 What is the heart:
 The heart is made up of four different blood-filled areas called chambers.
o There are two chambers on each side; one on the top and one at the bottom
 The ventricles are located at the bottom half of the chambers.
 Blood is pumped by the heart through the arteries and veins to carry oxygen and
nutrients to the cells of the body
 The human heart pumps 1,900 gallons per day
 The heart pumps 1.3 gallons per minutes
 Each heartbeat holds ¼ cup of blood
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
 Student will watch a Brainpop video on the Heart.

Development/Teaching Approaches

Mini Lesson:
 Then the teacher will use a power point to talk about the heart. While students do a
fill in the blank note sheet.
o Slide 1: What you know, What you want to know discussion
o Slide 2: Cardiovascular system and what it is made of
o Slide 3: Heart
 The teacher will have the students write down their guess on how
much blood they think the heart pumps per day. The students will
discuss their thoughts with their groups.
 The teacher will then write the answer (1,900 gallons) onto the blank
on the power point. The teacher will hold up a gallon tub to show how
much a gallon is.
 The teacher will have the students hold up a fist to show how big their
heart is.
o Slide 4: Blood
o Slide 5: Atria
o Slide 6: Ventricles
o Slide 7: Prediction
 The teacher will hold up a ¼ measuring cup and ask the students to
think about what it could represent.
 The students will talk in their group and come up with a prediction as a
group.
 One person from each group will write the group’s prediction on the
board. The teacher will reference these predictions after the students
complete the inquiry based experiment.
 The students will write their predictions on the observation sheet
before they start.
 Throughout the slides, there are key terms and important words highlighted. The
student will fill in the guided notes by filling in the blanks.
 The teacher will ask the students to put their thumbs up if they understand the content
or thumbs down if they do not understand the content.
Guided Practice
 The teacher will explain the experiment and model the steps of the experiment and the
role of each student.
o The teacher will show one trial run.
o The teacher will show how to stop and start the timer.
o The teacher will scoop the water from one bucket to the other.
o The teacher will show how to observe while the one person is timing and the
other is scooping.
o The teacher will explain that the students observing are trying to understand
what the cup and the water represents.
o The teacher will model how to write the observations and the thinking she
uses while writing those observations.
o The teacher will then explain:
 The one student will then scoop the water with the measuring cup into
the other tub when the timer starts, when the time reaches a minute the
student with the timer will say “time” and the student pouring will
stop.
 The students who observed will share their observations with the other
two partners. The students will then check “yes” or “no” on the sheet
if the student got all the water into the other bucket.
 The students will then repeat the steps for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th trial
and be sure to record the data and observations each time.
 The group members can change their prediction to what the ¼ cup
measuring cup represents.
 The class will come together and one member from each group will
insert their data on to the overall class sheet on the computer so, that
all the students can see it on the SMARTBoard.
Independent Practice:
 Students will complete 4 different trial runs.
 One student will be in charge of pressing start and stop for the timer.
 One student will be scooping the water with the measuring cup into the empty tub.
 The 2 other students will record how many measuring cups full of water the group
member scooped into the bucket.
 The one student will then scoop the water with the measuring cup into the other tub
when the timer starts, when the time reaches a minute the student with the timer will
say “time” and the student pouring will stop.
 The students who observed will share their observations with the other two
partners. The students will then check “yes” or “no” on the sheet if the student got all
the water into the other bucket.
 The students will then repeat the steps for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th trial and be sure to
record the data and observations each time..
 The students will think about their predictions and make changes if they would like
to.
 The class will come together and one member from each group will insert their data
on to the overall class sheet on the computer so, that all the students can see it on the
SMARTBoard.
Assessment:
 Students will complete a 10 question quiz on kahoot, with an 69-79% accuracy.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
 The teacher will show the students on the powerpoint that the ¼ measuring cup
represents a single heartbeat. Each heartbeat pumps 2.4 ounces of blood or ¼ cup of
blood. It takes about 72 beat per minute to pump this much blood.
 As a class, we will discuss our findings and thoughts by looking at the data on the
SMARTBoard that the class collected.
 After learning about the heart student will learn about the heart rate during exercise.
o Have the students do an exercise video.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
 Bob who has a learning disability will be given the option to have a friend reread
questions from the Kahoot if need.
 Bob will be given a graphic organizer/guided notes to fill out during the powerpoint
so, that he will be able to follow along.
 To differentiate, the teacher will split the class in half and group students by ability
so, that there is a variety of skills in each group.

Materials/Resources:
2 large dish pans, buckets, containers (per group)
1.3 gallons of water (per group)
¼ cup measuring cup (per group)
Timer (per group)
Observation sheet (one per student)
