Cross town football rivals Darley and Bacchus Marsh will receive equal
airtime on Apple 98.5fm this season.
The community radio station will cover the two football and netball
teams equally, with all home games broadcast live throughout the Ballarat
Football League season.
Bill Mansell, Apple 98.5 Secretary and Treasurer, said it was a huge
decision to give the BFL coverage a shake-up.
“For a number of years, we have been doing Match of the Round, where
we co-broadcast with Melton,” he said.
“That meant we were often broadcasting two Ballarat teams, or two
Melton teams; so this year we decided to just really focus on our town”.
Mr Mansell said the schedule created by Apple 98.5fm meant both teams
received equal air time.
“The way this year’s fixture works is that sometimes the two teams play
at home together, both away in Ballarat or both at home in Bacchus Marsh.
We have therefore made the decision of which team we would choose for
that match, with both teams receiving the same amount of broadcasting
time”.
The broadcasting team consists of Todd Whelan, an experienced
broadcaster from multiple different stations; Wayne Miller from Apple
98.5fm, Bill Lucas and students from Ballarat Grammar School.
“We decided to put a call out for any students who may be interested in
sports journalism, or anything else in the field,” Mr Mansell said.
“We got a few responses back and a couple of students from Grammar
will be helping; one will work in the box and the other will be on the
ground, and if they want to swap they can. This will be a good experience
for them as they can get right into the game, taking scores for both football
and netball, and sticking the microphone in the face of the coach when
they can”.
The live broadcast will kick off with the senior grand final replay between (L-R) Bill Lucas and Moorabool News’ sports writer Todd Whelan are ready to broadcast on Apple 98.5fm the

Taskforce on
the radar
By Kate Taylor
It’s been half a century since Cherrison Lawton joined the Women’s Royal
Australian Air Force.
The Bacchus Marsh RSL President was just 19-years-old and living in
Rockhampton in Queensland at the time.
She underwent a six-week rookie course before being transferred to the
central photographic establishment in Laverton, Victoria.
“I spent three years in the force as an air photo plotter,” she said.
“In those days, the photos were taken and used to see where the planes
had travelled and whether or not they had hit their targets. Some of the
plotting was also used for map making”.
Mrs Lawton said she was encouraged by her father to join the force in
1968.
“Both my father and grandfather were serviceman, so it was always
something that I was quite interested in,” she said.
“I think there was also a sense of wanting to go out into the big wide
world, which I did, and being in the force really made you feel like you
were doing something worthwhile.
“I met and trained with a number of really inspiring women and it was
a pretty huge thing to leave home and travel around and meet so many
people”.
Mrs Lawton attended a reunion for the Women’s Royal Australian Air
Force in Adelaide from April 6 to 8.
“This was my first reunion and I thought it would be a special one for me
to go to, considering it had been 50-years for me,” she said.
“It actually turned out to be even more special than expected because I
caught up with one of the girls that I actually joined the force and did all
my training with. I didn’t even know she was coming, so that was really
exciting”.
Mrs Lawton said the WRAAF Reunion was a wonderful experience, filled
with lots of re-connecting and sharing old memories.
“Even though some of the ladies and I had been apart for all those years,
we connected straight away. I think when you share the same vision and
experiences, you really do feel united.
“On a personal level, 50-years was a point of celebration for me. It is
important to reflect and appreciate that what you did back then was
important, and that it shaped your life. It is important to celebrate your Bacchus Marsh RSL President Cherrison Lawton attended a recent reunion in South Australia – 50-years
