Topic: The effect of gravity on mass and weight
Standard(s): S8P3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate
information about cause and effect relationships
between force, mass, and the motion of objects.
a. Analyze and interpret data to identify patterns in
the relationship between speed and distance,
and velocity and acceleration.
b. Construct an explanation using Newton’s Laws of
Motion to describe the effects of balanced and
unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.
c. Construct an argument from evidence to support
the claim that the amount of force needed to
accelerate an object is proportional to its mass
(inertia.)

The students will be able to:
a. Explain the effect distance and mass has on
gravitational force.
b. Determine the net force acting on an object.
c. Calculate the force needed to accelerate an
object.
d. Calculate both the weight and mass of objects on
different planets.
e. Compare and contrast weight and mass.
Essential Question(s):
1. How does distance between objects effect their
gravitational pull on each other?
2. How does changing the mass of an object effect its
gravitational force?
3. How do you calculate the net force acting on an
object?
4. What is the difference between the weight of an
object and its mass?
Lesson Procedures:
1. Using a learning styles inventory, I determined the learning style of each of my students.
2. I assigned different items to students based on their learning styles.
3. For students who are auditory, they were given a video to watch of me talking them through the study guide.
4. For students who are kinesthetic, they were given a simple lab to work through.
5. Visual students were given a Magic School Bus episode to watch with an accompanying worksheet that
included guided questions.
6. I answered any questions students had and monitored the classroom as students worked.
7. Students submitted their work at the end of class for a grade.
