Assignment Aims:

Students will apply the features of Computer Aided Design software (Autodesk
Inventor, SolidWorks, Fusion 360) to produce parametric digital models and a
full set of detailed working drawings for furniture designs.

Students will appreciate the processes required to produce parametric digital

models and working drawings in multiple 3D modelling packages which are
commonly found in the wood and furniture manufacturing sector.

Students will utilise top down modelling methodologies and shape before size
principles to create parametric furniture models.

Requirements:

For this assignment students are required to select a furniture design or piece of
furniture that they have manufactured during their time in GMIT Letterfrack
and use Autodesk Fusion 360, SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor to produce
parametric computer generated digital models and working drawings. Furniture
designs or furniture products that have previously been drawn using a 3D
modelling package and submitted as part of any other college assessment, may
not be used for this assignment.

Students are expected to take care in selecting which designs to model for this
assignment. The completed 3D model must contain a minimum of 5 unique parts
or bodies of suitable complexity to display a broad and competent understanding
of the selected software. Designs which may be too simplistic or basic should not
be selected for this assignment as they will offer limited scope or students to
demonstrate their skills with the software. Students are expected to confirm the
suitability of their chosen design with their module lecturer.

The model must be configurable in at least the Overall Height, Overall Depth
and Overall Width. The model should also have additional configurable
properties such as material thickness and part dimensions. Careful
consideration must be given to design intent and all sketches, features, bodies,
components, assemblies and drawings must be suitably named and labelled.

From the components and bodies modelled, students must produce a full set of
professionally laid out working drawings. Drawings must include section and
detail views of the model assembly to communicate all part dimensions and
design specifications. Drawings should be prepared so as to demonstrate a
sufficiently high knowledge of the use and capabilities of the selected 3D
modelling package. All drawings must include suitable dimensions, borders, title
blocks, annotations and assembly details.

All drawings are to be submitted electronically via Learnonline. The drawings of

the finished 3D model should conform with BS 8888 and be presented in A3
format. The drawings are to be presented in First Angle Orthographic Projection.

Students must take care that all model files are within a single project folder,
this will prevent any errors or missing links from occurring when the project
folder is zipped and uploaded to Moodle.

Project Deliverables:

The following must be prepared and submitted for the chosen furniture 3D
digital model and drawings:
 Digital file, project folder and all necessary assembly and part files
required to view and configure the 3D digital model.
 Working drawings of the model assembly which should include:
o The main orthographic views
o A rendered isometric view
o A suitable border and title block saved as a template
o All dimensions and information necessary to manufacture the
design
o Any other necessary annotations
o Sections views with Architectural call outs
o Detail views with Architectural call outs

Note: It is the responsibility of each student to save files correctly. Please check
that all work has been saved correctly prior to submission. Any missing files or
information cannot be considered for assessment.

Assessment Criteria and Marking Scheme

Assessment will be based on the student’s ability to utilise the basic and
advanced modelling techniques demonstrated during lab tutorials and the
completeness and parametric adaptability of the completed model.

All elements are due to be submitted via Learnonline on 11th January 2018
(before 20:00).

Unless accompanied by a signed absence sheet. Late submissions will not be

marked.
