Pedagogy
-After covering the Civil War completely in class over the
semester, students will be given numbers one through 4.
-Students will be assigned subjects according to numbers:
1- Union Soldiers, 2- Confederate Soldiers, 3- Women, 4- Slaves
-Students will use Popplet Lite on the iPads to help brainstorm
the major points concerning the role of their subject during the
time period surrounding and during the civil war in order for the
instructor to assess understanding of curriculum. This is in
preparation for writing a short (four paragraph) informative essay
on their subject to share with their group and collaboratively edit.
-The instructor will closely observe students during creation to
ensure understanding of the objective and application.
-Students will launch Popplet.
-Students will select Settings (wheel at top).
-Students will select Make New Popple.
-Students will tap dots on all four sides of Popple to make new
Popple boxes leading from the main box.
-Students will make at least four Popples leading from the
secondary boxes.
-Students can drag boxes to arrange any way and chose from
settings at bottom of boxes to resize popples, change color of
popples, type inside of popples, draw in popples, and take
pictures to go along with info in popple.
-Instructor will advise students to think about the effects of war
on the individual subject, what they believed, what they had to
do, what the end of the war meant for them.
-Students will write their subject in the main popple, four major
points about their subject in the next popples, and sentences
relating to those points in each popple leading from those. The
students may add as many popples as needed for supporting
sentences. These sentences will simply be transferred into
paragraphs for essay.

-After students have completed their Popplet on the Civil War
and written their short essay, it will be used for collaborative
enhancement and editing practice.
-Students will be divided into groups with each group containing
numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 from creating exercise.
-Student 1 will launch Baiboard 3 on the iPad, choose +New
Board, title it Civil War – Group _ (add group #), tap OK.
-Student one will then tap three dots at bottom left and choose
Start Meet, and tap Start.
-A meet number will be generated and given at bottom middle of
screen. Student is to write this number on whiteboard beside
group # so instructor and group members can join.
-Each group member will join by:
~Launching Baiboard, tapping Join Meet at top right, entering
meet number, and tapping OK.
-After all students have joined the meet, they should temporarily
exit BaiBoard, open their essay document and choose to upload it
to the Baiboard shelf. (Instructor to demonstrate.)
-Students will re-enter Baiboard and go to the page
corresponding with their subject number by tapping page arrows
at bottom right, tap paperclip, tap Baiboard Shelf, and chose their
essay. This will upload the document.
-Instructor will demonstrate how to choose to write, insert items,
erase, change colors, etc.
-Instructor will advise that members are to show respect to one
another at ALL times and strive to be helpful.
-Each group member is to choose a color and stick with it for
editing. They are to type their name and color on page 5.
-Group will decide on color to use for text box communications
to the group during collaboration and add this to page 5, also.
-Each student should edit parts of essays other than their own

-Each group member can add a picture from the internet to each

picture, and tapping the camera in the top right. Tap photo,
choose crop, edit photo, and place where desired. There are also
a ton of Icons to choose from within the app.
-When finished, students will tap on the screen and choose Lock
from the menu in order to save edits.
-The instructor will later view these in order to assess for the
above SOLs.
-Students will view in order to complement knowledge of subject
through peer suggestions and self-evaluate needs for writing
improvement.
