Max. Marks : 60 Duration: 3 Hours
PART A (Answer any two)

1.a. Mention the objectives of soil stabilization. 4 marks

b. What are the effects of cement stabilization on maximum dry density, optimum
moisture content, plasticity, strength, swelling, shrinkage and cracking?
5 marks

2.a. Explain cement stabilization with emphasis on soil-cement-water reactions.

b. What are the various ground modification methods? 5 marks

3.a. Explain granular stabilization. 4 marks

b. Given that the maximum grain size of a soil is 5mm. Calculate the diameters D 10,
D30 and D60 corresponding to 10%, 30% and 60% passing so that the maximum dry
density is achieved. Also check IS classification.

PART B (Answer any two)

4.a. Illustrate the chemical reaction between soil and hardening agents

4 marks

b. Estimate water content reduction due to lime hydration and water loss due to
heat generation for 1 kg of quick lime during slaking. Given initial water content of
soil=50%, Ground has a lime content equivalent to 10% of dry weight of soil. Molar
heat capacity of quick lime= 65.3 kJ/mol. Heat of vaporization= 2260kJ/mol, change
in temperature= 80⁰ C, Heat capacity of water= 4.2kJ/kg ⁰ C.
