HAZARDS
PRESENT

RESOURCES
REQUIRED

 Always wear a high visibility vest and relevant personal protective equipment when working or
attending to emergencies on the forecourt. Extreme heat conditions can be experienced when
working outdoors in some locations. When working outdoors in direct sun, always wear
appropriate personal protective equipment, for example, hat and sunscreen.
 Between the hours of 8:00pm and 5:00am, team members must not exit the store, unless the site
is being closed, to use external toilets, for a business critical task or in the event of an emergency.
 Always be aware of any vehicles that have potential to reverse towards you and wait for them to
leave.
 Always use approved safety cones, wheelie bins and telescopic bars and poles around the area
you are working in to enhance visibility to drivers.
 Always wear puncture-proof gloves when emptying car wash rubbish bins and vacuum units.
 Always be aware of the location of emergency equipment i.e. fire extinguishers, hose reels,
emergency stop buttons (console and forecourt if installed).
 Always be aware of any black spots on the forecourt where the duress alarm will not operate.
 Always be aware of slip/trip hazards when on the forecourt area.
 Always ensure that you sight the pump to check that there are
no ignition sources prior to authorisation.
 PA is only to be used if there is an immediate safety risk.
 Authorisation of filling equipment on trailers is permitted as long
as it has a purpose built fuel tank e.g.: bob cat, earth moving
equipment.
 Team Members should not allow fuel to be dispensed if:
 the vehicle engine is running
 a person is smoking on the forecourt
 a person under 16 attempting to operate a dispenser
 a person attempting to fill fuel in a non-approved container

 the nozzle is chocked open (excludes high flow diesel)
 person filling flammable fuel container inside a vehicle, boot or back of utility
 container is not placed on the ground
 a person is using a mobile phone while filling their car
 a person is sitting on a motorbike while filling up the tank
 Always ensure no ignition sources are introduced to the forecourt.

CONTAINERS AND TANKS

 Always be aware of correct procedure for the filling of fuel containers ie. before authorisation of the
pump, ensure approved fuel container is being used and that the container is placed firmly on the ground
(earthed).
 Fuels (flammable and combustible liquids) shall not be dispensed into a container unless:
 the capacity of the container is not greater than 25 litres and;
 the container complies with AS/NZS2906 or is substantially leak-proof, metal and has a tight fitting
closure.


 Only allow the filling of secured portable diesel tanks if the following conditions are met:
 the tank is of sturdy construction
 labelled ‘Diesel Only’ or is coloured grey
 has an earth strap fitted to the vehicle to prevent static build up or the customer can assure the Team
Member that the tank is appropriately earthed to the vehicle eg: attached to the vehicle.
