i) INDUSTRY

The vape industry has grown up over four years since 2013. It was started from Southern
Russia back in 500BC which was a tradition of Scythians, a massive clan of Iranian Eurasian
rovers. Scythians can be seen through Figure 1. Basically, Scythians would throw the weed on
red hot stone, which then turned into vapor immediately. This can be illustrating through
Figure 2 (James, 2015). Vaping is the act of inhale and exhale the water vapor through the
electric device which known as tank vaper or commercial name as e-cigarette.

Figure 2: The first real vaporizer was invented by Irfan Shiekh of Mogul’s (Present-day
Afghanistan) Safavid Dynasty known as “Hookah, or as a waterpipe,narghile, arghila,
qalyan, shisha”. About 1400 years ago, Mogul then rulers of India introduce Hookah to
India which was then more used to a Chillum.

Water vapor is an e-liquid in gas phase form that was inhale and exhale by vapers. This
e-liquid can be seen through Figure 3. Vapers is the name of people whom using vape. E-
liquid consist of propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG) or contained both. A
combination of PG and VG with natural or together with artificial flavor was used to created
exotic and special flavors (Peter, 2017).

The form of the gas phase of the liquid looks thicker than some but disperse more
faster into the air and smell much better than cigarette which it has lot of flavor. Gas phase

form can be seen through Figure 4. Those flavors come variety like fruit, candy, mint and
many more (Alexandra, 2016).

Vaping has been classified as tobacco free and some cases it concluded as nicotine free
which was a version of traditional tobacco cigarette. The obnoxious smell eventually has all
the side effect and health risk.

A vape or vaporizer consists of mouthpiece, battery, cartridge, atomizer, and circuitry

with sensor. This can be seen through Figure 5. Cartomizer is a modern design for atomizer
that a combination of atomizer and cartridge into one. E-liquid for mostly known as e-juice
located in the cartridge whilst atomizer has it heating element. The shape will look like thin
metallic coil that is heated by power generator from battery (Thomas, 2016).

The vaporizer works when a user takes a drag on mouthpiece, and the battery will heat
up the coil. Usually preheat time will takes around two or three minutes and the battery heat
will heat up the coil, then a cotton wick absorbs than the boiling point from e-liquid which
naturally turns it into vapor. This vapor then inhale by the user that reaches his lung and is
then exhaled.

iii) ISSUES ABOUT VAPE

E-cigarettes or also well known as vape or vaping, has been running in our country for
so many years now. However, there are still issues or controversial when reviewing about this
topic. In Malaysia, about 22.8% of the population in this country are smokers according to
National Health and Morbidity Survey. Most of people switching from tradition cigarettes to
vape is the new intention to stop smoking. But how can the vape help the smokers to quit and
does it affect the non-smoker like the cigarette?

Most of the smoker become addicted to smoking is cause by nicotine but due to its
high dangerous amount of chemical in a single cigarette, this is number one cause of cancer.
In United Kingdom, the use of traditional cigarette was almost ban and their government
started to campaign or encourage their people to switch to vape. To compare the risk of health
between these two, it is clearly the vaping has a lower chances to get health problem because
the e-juice only contain three major component which is propylene glycol(PG) , vegetable
glycerine(VG) and flavouring. The availability of e-juice in overseas like UK is easy. For
example, almost all petrol station sell e-juice compared to old cigarette and unlike our
country, we need a special store to sell all those kind of goods that related to vape. Common
store like 7-eleven, Speed mart, and etc cannot sell this product due to the restriction of law in
Malaysia.

Statistics shows that about 30% of death caused by cancer and other lethal diseases as
a result of smoking. However, according to a report by UK’s Department of Health, its shows

that vaping is 95% safer than tobacco cigarettes. Vape can reduce smoking addict because the
e-juice contain nicotine that can be an alternative to the old cigarettes. But does the vaping
cause people around you any harm like the traditional cigarettes does? The chemical that been
combust by the vape still can give harm towards other people but it is safer than smoking.
Vaping has more advantage when compared to the cigarette and it is more social acceptance
because the odour smells nice, no teeth discolour or even make smell breath.

Another issue is the effect of vaping on health. The formation of formaldehyde can be
much higher than a regular cigarette if the vape fire at a high temperature. Dr. Konstantinos
Farsalinos and Clive Bates stated that the vaping can only cause the formation of
formaldehyde is when the vape was fired with insufficient liquid also known as dry puff. The
uses of PG and VG have not yet proven to be harmful to the people.

iv) RATIONALES

As one of the leading companies of E-cigarette flavor industry in Malaysia, Nasty

worldwide has more knowledge about e-cigarette and it effect on human health. The fact
and the myth about the vaping could be clarified from them. The pioneer of this industry
in Malaysia surely has obtained a lot of data about the properties of the flavor which also
contain nicotine as a traditional cigarette.

population already know that those three gaseous items are very famous nowadays
among us not only in Malaysia but also in others successful countries.

a) What is actually the different between those vape, cigarettes and shisha?
b) What are the different effects for those three items in terms of health?
c) What is the ages of people whose take this vape? Only teenagers or including
adult people?

Seri Dr S.Subramaniam said, “From our perspective, it (vape) is one of other type of
cigarette with a different way. The vaper will affect as they smoking only the tar

13. From the Star news online, the article stated that a 24 years old guy was diagnosed for
having a cancer because of smoking and was recorded as the youngest person for
having a cancer.
Question: Do you think that the vapers also have a higher chance for having a
cancer if he started vaping in the early of age?

14. Based on the Internet article stated that Malaysia has become Asia’s vaping
wonderland. This can bring more influence to the teenagers and others young
generation to become a vapers.
Question: Is there any effect for a new vapers if they started to vape, and never
been any experience in smoking? Especially through their lung.

15. Nowadays, shisha has become the second most popular after cigarette,
Question: What do you think about this phenomenal? How harmful is shisha
compare to vape?

16. Mostly when they smoking shisha, citizen likes to relate it with Islamic question. For
an instance, is it halal or haram because part of the component of shisha is using
water pipe, which known as hookah or hubble bubble.

b) What if the person does not use any kind of tobacco rather than use
rosewater?

17. Some country in Asean region, shisha has been decided to be ban especially in
Singapore and this follow by Malaysia, in Malacca where all over the place are not
allow to sell shisha.

a) With the ban, is it possible for people to buy shisha tobacco overseas for
personal consumption?
b) In your opinion, why shisha is being banned while cigarettes are allowed to be
sold?
c) What will be done to educate the public especially the young about the harmful
effect of shisha smoking and attract them to choose vape instead of shisha?

make an appointment with the company to make a visit in the industry.
