Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to communicate the testing methodology used to validate installation
and removal of Operating Environments (OEs) for HP-UX 11i (November 2000 release). To that
end, this paper includes the following information:
• Hardware configurations of each system under test (SUT), including whether the
particular system was configured for 32- or 64-bit operation
• Software starting points for each test case
• Documentation of anomalies detected during installation and removal tests,
including:
o Examples of messages
o Causes of the anomalous messages
o Impacts of the anomalies on the system operation
Each test suite covered both cold installation and updating of the operating system. Please send
any comments on this paper to: mailto:gcsupport@cup.hp.com.
Update Testing
Purpose
The update testing was designed to confirm that previous versions (10.20 & 11.0) of the HP-UX
operating system could be successfully updated to HP-UX version 11i (September 2001 release).
The criteria used to define “Successful Update” are as follows:
Test Assumptions
• All applications can be installed from either media or a combined depot.
• The update requires no manual steps.
• All products can handle a reboot situation.
• During the update, all products will completely remove all 10.20 or 11.0 versions.
• Network drivers will be installed whether the card is present or not.
• Except for HP-PB ATM, all network drivers will be usable after the update.
• The update-ux command will be used to perform the update.
• The update requires only one reboot.

Starting Points
The systems chosen for the test platform were loaded with 10.20 (32-bit) or 11.0 (64-bit or 32-bit)
with MCOE (Mission Critical Operating Environment) products from either the September 2000 or
March 2001 application releases. This provided the most comprehensive product test coverage.
The updates were then performed from a super depot containing all the OEs, as well as from two
depots simulating updating from media.
Platforms Tested
We used the following platforms for update testing.

Update Defects
Listed below are the defects that occurred during update testing.
Headline:
A 9000/777/C110 being updated from 11.990P(32bit) to 11i Base OS (32
bit) had the following warnings in the swagent.log:
* This script had warnings but the execution of this fileset will still proceed. Check the above
output from the script for further details.
Explanation:
This warning did not cause any problems. The update proceeded successfully.
Headline:
After updating from 10.20 ACE5, plus the HWE 700 bundle, to 11i TCOE the following warnings
were found in the swagent.log after doing swverify:
Product .Filesets:
OS-Core.UX-CORE
22
Hewlett-Packard Company
Explanation:
This is due to the fact that several product deliver files to the /usr/sbin/olrad.d directory. These
individual products are managing this directory. They should not be doing this. This will not cause
any error during the update. We are still trying to find which of the many products that deliveries
to this directory are causing this error.

15 ba Core I/O Adapter
15/1 tty Built-in Serial Port DUART
15/2 tty Built-in Serial Port DUART
15/3 unknown Built-in Ethernet
Explanation:
This is normal behavior for built-in Ethernet card at address 15/3.
Headline:
When upgrading from 11.0 to 11.i MCOE, the following message appears in the swagent.log:
Explanation:
This defect is due to the configure and unconfigure scripts not working in the 11.00 and 10.20
versions of the HSC/GSC 100BT driver. The configure scripts of this driver are supposed to create
some files in the /dev/diag directory, but they don’t do that. During an update the unconfigure
script is called and this checks for the existence of these files and does not find them. This problem
will be fixed at the next release of the product for 10.20 and 11.0. This problem has no effect on
the 11.0 to 11i upgrade.
23
Hewlett-Packard Company
Headline:
Having Mirrored disk enabled will cause the following error:
Product .Filesets:
LVM.LVM-MIRROR-RUN
Explanation:
This is due to the fact that mirrored disk is still active. There are two ways to fix this problem
1. You can do a lvsplit before you start the update. This allows you a way to have a backup
copy of your starting point. You then will have to do an lvmerge to resync your Mirrored
disk.
2. You do not have to do an lvsplit before you do the update. This will cause all your
Mirrored disk to be updated at the same time. This will cause the errors below to be in the
swagent.lot
Either of the above methods works fine.

Purpose
The install, remove, reinstall tests were designed to confirm that certain products could be installed,
removed, and reinstalled successfully. The criteria used to define “successful install, remove, and
reinstall” are as follows:
Test Assumptions
• All applications can be installed from either media or a combined depot.
• All products can handle a reboot situation.
• Products that share files or filesets can be installed, removed, and reinstalled in one group.
Testing Process
• Install system with OE using Ignite/UX
• Save all log files
• Verify the system with swverify
• Save all log files
• Reboot system
• Install Products with swinstall
• Save all log files
• Swverify the system
• Save all log files
• Reboot system
• Remove product groups with swremove
• Save log files

Repeat above steps for each product or set of products starting from “remove product group” until
all products have been removed and reinstalled.
Starting Points
The systems chosen for the test platform were loaded with the latest version of 11i and one of the
following OEs: Base, Technical Computing OE, Mission Critical OE, or Enterprise OE.
Platforms Tested
We used D-Class, N-Class, and K-Class machines .
Share Groups
Share groups were used for install, remove and reinstall testing. (A “share group” is defined as a
group of products that share files.) Using shared groups for install/remove testing allowed us to
validate that all the files were removed for this test group. The following shared groups were used
to do install, remove, and reinstall testing starting with the 11i Base.

Explanation:
This message does not cause any problems. There technically is no fix to this issue. It turns out that
any binary can cause 'ld' to emit the 'debug corruption' warning when performance and debug
bits are intermingled. Though 32bit binaries will probably exhibit this behavior potentially more
than 64bit ones, because 64bit 'ld' deals with this issue differently. The kernel in this case is ok,
because it is expected that performance bits for most of it's .o's will intermingled with a select
number of .o's which are built that way for Q4 crash coredump
