Part A
Name of Article: Communication Disorders and Challenging Behaviors: Supporting
Children’s Functional Communication Goals in the Classroom
Author: Katy Gregg
Journal Name: Early Childhood Education Journal Volume 45 Issue 4
Date of Article: 07/2017
Summary:

Children with communication disorders often present challenging behaviors

because of their frustration with their lack of ability to communicate. The challenging
behaviors that are present can lead to inadequate social engagement among peers and
improper emotional regulation. Individualized planning of functional goals for children
with communication disorders can increase quality classroom interactions. A team made
up of the child’s teacher, parents, and an SLP can work together to come up with a plan
to help the child achieve the communication goals that are needed for proper
communication and daily functioning. Peer involvement in a classroom setting will help
the child build self-confidence. Once the child has learned that his or her communication
is progressing, and that they are able to communicate properly thanks to their newly
learned techniques, the challenging behaviors will decrease.

Part B
Title of Article: The Roles of Teaching Experience and Authoritative Classroom
Management Style on Student Discipline
Author: Allison Benware
Year: 2017
Summary:

This article discussed how classroom management strategies, specifically the

professional educator’s management of discipline, has a major impact on students’
educational experience. Understanding the relation between how the teacher
manages the classroom and how the students behave can be a valuable tool in
improving classroom environment and student outcome. It has been discovered that
when students are disruptive and behave badly, learning becomes very difficult. One
of the hypotheses made about classroom management was: teachers who self-
identify to a greater degree with an authoritative classroom management style will
report fewer office discipline referrals and a greater prevalence of discipline related
notes, emails, or phone calls with the students’ guardian. Another hypothesis made
was: when years of teaching experience increases and the teacher’s self-
identification with an authoritative classroom management style is high, there will
be a higher frequency of discipline related parent or guardian communication. The
participants of the study were approved by a board of people and were then asked
to complete a survey. The results concluded that a teacher’s degree of self-reported
authoritative classroom management style was not a significant predictor of
frequency of office discipline referrals or discipline related communication with
parents. The results also proved that the years of experience and the teacher’s
degree of self-reported authoritative classroom management style were not
significant predictors for the frequency of discipline related communication with the
student’s guardian.

Part C
Name of Article: Yoga
Author: Andrea R Jain
Newspaper: The Washington Post
Year: August 16th, 2015
Summary:

Yoga has become so popular in the United States that nearly 10% of Americans
have tried it. The growing popularity of yoga is not restricted to just the United States.
The United Nations declared June 21st the International Day of Yoga. Although yoga has
become one of the most fashionable practices, there are numerous myths about it. The
myths are: yoga is exclusively of Hindu origin, yoga is not religious, Swami
Vivekananda created modern yoga, you need money to practice yoga, and yoga has
always been about physical fitness. Yoga classes in secular contexts have qualities that
set a religious mood. There are nonprofit classes that people can take if they do not want
to pay a lot to practice yoga.
