Musical Instruments
Musical instrument are usually grouped into four families. One family is made up the stringed
instruments, which are played by plucking or by passing a bow of horsehair over them. This
group includes the violin, the viola, the cello, the double bass, the guitar, the banjo, the
mandolin, the ukulele and the harp. The wind instruments, which are sounded by blowing,
make up another family. These in turn are grouped into two choirs: the woodwinds, so called
because they are generally made of wood, and the brasses which are made of metal. The
woodwinds, so the piccolo, the flute, the clarinet, the English horn, the oboe, the bassoon, and
the saxophone. The brasses are the cornet, the trumpet, the trombone, the French horn, and
the tuba. The third group is comprised of percussion instrument which are struck in some way
to produce sounds. The are two subgroups of percussion instruments; those that produce
definite pitch and can therefore be tuned, and those that produce indefinite pitch or noise.
With the first subgroup are the timpani, the xylophone, the marimba, the chimes and the
glockenspiel. The second group is made up of snare drum, the bass, the cymbals, the gong,
the tambourine, the castanets, the triangle and the woodblock. The fourth family of musical
instruments is composed of those equipped with a keyboard, like the piano, the accordion, the
celeste, the harpsichord and the organ.
